In Borderlands 4, you can expect a revamped looting mechanism with the addition of novel gunsmiths, expanding the range of weapons by means of a component system, and fine-tuning the frequency at which items are dropped.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that during the PlayStation State of Play, Borderlands 4 revealed some significant modifications to its gun mechanics and loot drops, all aimed at recapturing the original “loot grind” magic. In this upcoming adventure, Borderlands 4 will showcase eight unique weapon manufacturers, with three of them – Order, Ripper, and Daedalus – being entirely new. Each manufacturer specializes in creating weapons that excel in specific areas, such as Jakobs weapons dishing out extra critical-hit damage.
Borderlands 4 Loot Manufacturers:
- Jakobs – Critical hit friendly
- Maliwan – Elemental focused
- Vladof – Less accuracy, more bullets
- Tediore – Toss to reload
- Torgue – Explosive
- Order – charge shots
- Ripper – Fully automatic
- Daedalus – Easy to use, multiple ammo types
In Borderlands 4, as revealed on the PlayStation Blog, unlike its predecessors, weapon manufacturers will overlap due to the Licensed Parts system. This means that weapons in the game might incorporate components from various manufacturers, granting you multiple specialties on a single firearm. For instance, you could come across a gun made by Vladof with a high ammo capacity and Torgue’s explosive bullets. It seems that these unique combinations will be how weapons drop in-game, as there was no indication of crafting or the ability to swap parts on guns.
Alongside the fresh guns, Borderlands 4 also introduces three additional equipment categories. A common slot called Ordnance combines grenades and heavy weapons. Unlike before, heavy weapons now follow a cooldown mechanism rather than depleting ammo. Enhancements have taken over Artifacts, offering performance enhancements for specific weapon producers. Lastly, there are Repkits, which offer healing or buff effects on a cooldown system.
In Borderlands 4, Gearbox plans to enhance the thrill of obtaining loot by altering drop frequencies and boosting the power and distinct characteristics of legendary weapons. This modification aims to make the hunt for these items more exhilarating. Furthermore, each player in co-op mode will have their own instance for loot drops, and you’ll be able to replay missions and boss fights for additional loot rewards to assist with the grind.
The upcoming release of Borderlands 4 has been advanced to September 12, and it’s expected to be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2, and personal computers (PC).
