Borderlands 4 Switch 2 release date confirmed but it’s not all good news

It’s been officially announced that Borderlands 4 will be released for the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025, according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, with a few conditions attached.

In a video shared on his Twitter account on the 22nd of July, Pitchford made it clear that the Switch 2 edition of the looter shooter will retain all its elements without any omissions, and it will also support cross-play functionality.

In an exchange with fans post the video launch, Pitchford explained that regardless if it’s a physical or digital copy, Borderlands 4 on the hybrid console needs to be downloaded because it is a “large-scale game.

Some fans have found debate over the Nintendo Switch 2’s Game Key Cards divisive, as these cards, which grant access to digital games instead of physically housing the game itself, raise questions about long-term game preservation and personal ownership among critics.

Similarly, although not as significantly, needing a compulsory update prevents playing directly offline immediately without initially connecting to the internet, which proves impossible.

An important message regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4:

Borderlands 4 will be “mostly” around 30 FPS on Switch 2

In addition, when queried regarding the game’s performance, particularly whether it could achieve 60 FPS on Switch 2, Pitchford stated, “We prioritized maintaining all features and enabling cross-platform compatibility.

In other words, expect the frame rate to generally stay near 30 frames per second, though there may be drops during intense scenes, battles, or when playing multiplayer games in handheld mode.

If you’re not content with compromising for the less potent hardware of the Switch 2, Borderlands 4 will be out a few weeks prior, starting from September 12, on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.
