In an unexpected turn of events, it’s been disclosed that the launch date for Borderlands 4 has been brought forward by approximately two weeks. This move is quite rare in the gaming industry where delays are more common, as seen with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, a game initially slated for last fall but released just last month instead. Coinciding with this new release date unveiling, we also learn that Sony will be hosting a Borderlands 4 State of Play event at 2:00 PM Pacific Time, 5:00 PM Eastern Time, and 11:00 PM Central European Time.
Borderlands 4 release date moves up, now releases September 12th instead of 23rd
Borderlands 4, one of the most anticipated games this year, is now set for an early release. Instead of September 23rd, it will be available from September 12th. The official Borderlands social media page announced this change earlier today with the message “Following thorough deliberation, numerous meetings, testing, and outstanding development work, we have decided to ADVANCE THE RELEASE DATE OF BORDERLANDS 4 to SEPTEMBER 12th.” The original post used all caps for emphasis.
In simpler terms, the same announcement provided updates on the upcoming “Borderlands 4”-centric State of Play event. The announcement hinted that viewers would receive an extended glimpse into the thrilling chaos expected in Kairos. Additionally, PlayStation themselves announced on social media that the State of Play will offer approximately 20 minutes of fresh insights about new weapons, skills, missions, and other aspects of this upcoming “Borderlands” game, making it the first opportunity for a detailed sneak peek at this new title in the series.
It’s exciting news for lovers of the Borderlands series! However, this year, it’s tough not to ponder about the reasons behind this change. Shifting a game’s launch date is not unprecedented, but it certainly is unusual. The upcoming Borderlands 4, published by 2K (the same team working with Rockstar Games on the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6), might have something to do with this. While it’s highly unlikely, if there’s anything that could potentially push a publisher to bring a video game forward, it could be the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Of course, we don’t know when GTA 6 will be released, but if anyone knows, it’s Rockstar and 2K.
It seems that Borderlands 4 will be quite an extensive game, and players might need some time to fully experience it before moving on to another title. Consequently, setting the new release date for September 12th could provide ample playtime for players to complete Borderlands 4, before diving into the upcoming Grand Theft Auto. Given that Rockstar’s new game is expected to drop between October and December this year, the question becomes how much breathing room will 2K want between these two heavy-hitting releases? However, there could be multiple factors influencing this decision. In any case, I hope the team at Gearbox feels confident about this new release date to ensure that Borderlands 4 is launched in a polished and complete state.
