Borderlands 4 “might be” $80 but Gearbox CEO doesn’t know

As a dedicated gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Borderlands 4. If it follows the trend set by Nintendo and Microsoft in 2025, it might just hit my wallet with an $80 price tag for their first-party games. That’s quite a chunk of change, but if the game is as epic as the previous ones, I’m ready to dig deep!

During the Q&A session at PAX East on May 9th, Randy Pitchford, who is the head of game developer Gearbox Software, was inquired about the cost for the next installment in the series.

To be honest, I’m not sure,” said Pitchford, taking a moment to consider the present state of the field.

Indeed, we’re living in a dynamic period. On one side, businesses aim to sell as many products as they can in a competitive market, while being mindful of price-conscious consumers. On the other hand, some recognize that production costs, such as game budgets and retail packaging tariffs, are escalating, making things quite complex, wouldn’t you agree?

Borderlands 4 pre-orders open “soon”

Regarding Borderlands 4 particularly, Pitchford mentioned that its production budget was over double that of the third installment. He didn’t disclose the exact cost, but he hinted that we could find out when pre-orders become available “soon”.

Pitchford suggested that perhaps the new pricing strategy by Nintendo and Microsoft is what we’ll see, or maybe we’ll hold off. He clarified that this choice ultimately lies with the publisher, not Gearbox.

As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that each and every Borderlands title I’ve enjoyed playing has been brought to life by 2K Games. Interestingly enough, 2K is actually an offshoot of Take-Two Interactive, the same powerhouse behind Rockstar Games – the geniuses who crafted the iconic Grand Theft Auto series.

The price set for Borderlands 4 might serve as a preliminary hint regarding the consumer’s cost for Grand Theft Auto 6 upon its release on May 26, 2026.

Similar to previous iterations, Borderlands 4 introduces four fresh Vault Hunter characters for gamers to select. Get familiar with Amon, Harlowe, Rafa, and Vex and their unique skills by checking out our character analysis.
