As a diehard fan, I was utterly thrilled during the State of Play event when Gearbox Software unveiled the juicy gameplay aspects of their upcoming looter-shooter, Borderlands 4. They dished out a treasure trove of details about loot upgrades, new types of enhancements, and two out of the four playable Vault Hunters: Vex and Rafa. The trailer also shone a spotlight on Kairos, a fresh planet in the Borderlands universe, where the emphasis is not just on accepting quests but rather discovering them independently as you traverse this new world.
In the video’s account, Kairos is a clandestine realm that has been concealed for millennia by Borderlands 4’s principal antagonist, known as The Timekeeper. Its whereabouts were unveiled due to the occurrences in Borderlands 3, as Lilith, the moon she teleported away from Pandora, shattered the barrier that hid Kairos, making it visible to the rest of the cosmos.
As a thrilled fan, I couldn’t help but be captivated when The State Of Play unveiled one of the game’s missions, nestled within the chilling beauty of the Terminus Range, a snow-capped mountainous region. The spotlight was cast on some exciting new movement mechanics, such as gliding, dashing, double-jumping, and point grappling, which promise an exhilarating experience. Additionally, a brand-new vehicle, the Digirunner, was introduced. Lastly, they showcased a dynamic weather system that will undoubtedly add another layer of immersion to this already tantalizing adventure.
The demonstration subsequently presents a silo, described in the video as “one of several fresh experiences scattered across Borderlands 4.” These experiences will pop up organically as players traverse the world of Kairos, without requiring a mission assignment prior – once you discover one of these spontaneous events, it gets marked on your map and monitored on the HUD.
At the Gamescom Opening Night Live event in August 2024, Gearbox Software unveiled Borderlands 4, the latest addition to their acclaimed looter-shooter series. A gameplay trailer for the game was shown at The Game Awards 2024, where it was officially announced that the game would be released in September of this year.
The release of Borderlands 4 has been advanced to September 12. You’ll be able to play it on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Initially planned for launch on September 23, the developers, 2K and Gearbox, decided to bring it forward earlier this week – they insist that it wasn’t due to Grand Theft Auto VI.
