Borderlands 4 Has Someone "Far More Dangerous" Than Handsome Jack Waiting To Be Revealed

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the prospect of Borderlands 4 brings an undeniable sense of excitement and anticipation. The return of Handsome Jack has long been speculated by the community, but Randy Pitchford’s recent tweet seems to hint at something even more sinister lurking in the wings.

During this week’s Gamescom opening Night Live event, Borderlands 4 was officially unveiled, and although the teaser trailer was entirely computer-generated, fans have been meticulously scouring it for hints about the upcoming game’s plot. A widely-discussed theory, originating from Twitter users JoltDude139 and UndeadMD, suggests that Borderlands 4 may bring back Handsome Jack, as a fleeting glimpse of a Vault symbol in the trailer closely resembles the one that was embedded into his face by Lilith in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

In a recent response, Randy Pitchford – head of the gearbox company – clarified that the symbol in question doesn’t point towards Handsome Jack, but instead, it suggests someone who is even more menacing and ominous.

That’s not handsome jack. That is something far more dangerous and sinister

From his debut in Borderlands 2 onwards, Handsome Jack has been widely recognized as the most outstanding antagonist in the loot-and-shoot series. Despite being killed by gamers at the game’s conclusion, his influence continued to resonate across subsequent Borderlands installments. In The Pre-Sequel, players had a chance to control a Jack doppelganger and aid the genuine article. In Borderlands 3, one of the additional content packs was centered around Jack’s orbital casino, where players dealt with a significant mess he created before departing.

In Tales from the Borderlands, the most striking remnant of Handsome Jack was undeniably the AI version of the antagonist. The outcome depended on your choices: either Rhys, who eventually became Atlas CEO, would preserve the EchoEye gadget housing Jack’s digital consciousness or eliminate it, thus permanently eliminating his menace.

It’s unclear if anyone could surpass Jack in terms of wickedness, but Pitchford might be trying to shift focus with his statement. Given the quirky humor of the Borderlands games, it’s possible that this could be a complex joke, setting up for the introduction of Really Handsome Jack into the series.

Borderlands 4 will launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
