Borderlands 4 Boss Says He Didn’t Mean To “Trigger” People With Comments On The Price

Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software, is still expressing his thoughts on the cost of Borderlands 4, which hasn’t been revealed yet. On social media, he stated that what matters most to him is ensuring players don’t spend more than they feel is fair or comfortable. This comes after some debate sparked by his previous statement suggesting that dedicated fans would manage to pay $80 for Borderlands 4 if it retails at that price.

He stated, “I make it a point to strive for a situation where the customer believes they’ve received more value than they paid for, regardless of the price.

In response to someone predicting that Borderlands 4 might not succeed if priced at $80, Pitchford stated he was addressing his genuine supporters.

He stated that his intention was to clarify that the decision wasn’t his, but if a $10 price hike becomes inevitable (as it seems the industry is trending this way), it would be alright because Borderlands 4 is an exceptional game with a large fanbase who recognize its value and will still want to purchase it.

He stated that his use of the term “real fans” caused a reaction in certain individuals. Later, he defended himself against the suggestion that his intention was to deliver a significant or profound message.

He expressed that it appeared as though he was forcing the concept on the audience, which might give the impression that he was underestimating them (a very poor choice of words, but he did not mean it and it does not align with his genuine feelings).

In his words, Pitchford expressed that, being an artist, he prefers not to witness rising prices as it might restrict the number of individuals who can enjoy the art. Simultaneously, Pitchford acknowledged his role as an entrepreneur, admitting that he comprehends “the reality of business and how market and economic forces are causing price hikes.

Eventually, it will be necessary for everyone to adjust in order to keep the creative machine running smoothly, so that it can generate revenue equal to or greater than its costs, ensuring we continue to enjoy top-notch content.

At PAX, Pitchford expressed that the current state of the video game industry, particularly its economy, is quite challenging or tough.

In simpler terms, he explained that in this market, sellers aim to sell as many items as they can while also being mindful of price-conscious buyers. Some sellers may resist raising prices, even though they understand that costs like production and packaging are rising due to increased game budgets and tariffs.

In a statement, it was mentioned that the production budget for Borderlands 4 is significantly larger than that of Borderlands 3, approximately double in size. Furthermore, Pitchford expressed his desire for the game to achieve high sales numbers so that Gearbox can channel those revenues towards developing more projects in the future.

2K, the company behind Borderlands 4, plans to determine the game’s selling price. The specific cost has yet to be revealed and might only be disclosed once pre-orders become available.

Nintendo and Mario Kart World are being sold for $80 each, similar pricing adjustments are planned by Microsoft for certain games coming up this year. Meanwhile, the game Mafia: The Old Country from 2K will retail at $50, with the aim to attract players who have limited free time due to their busy schedules.

In a bit over three months, starting September 12th, Borderlands 4 will be available to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, it’s also in the pipeline for Nintendo Switch 2, though we don’t have a specific release date as of now.
