Borderlands 4 Boss Reacts To Price Point Controversy

As a passionate follower, I’ve found myself expressing thoughts similar to Randy Pitchford, the man behind Gearbox, regarding the release of Borderlands 4. While I understand the concerns about the suggested price point of $80, I believe that dedicated fans would make it happen, understanding the value and excitement this game brings to our gaming community.

In a social media post, Pitchford expressed, “Nobody appreciates being overlooked, and I never meant to do so.” He also mentioned that he is deeply moved by the affection and encouragement that people have extended towards the developers as they strive to complete the game and make it available for players.

“Regardless of where the price lands, it’s going to be worth it and then some,” he said.

This originates from remarks by Pitchford during PAX East. When asked about the cost of Borderlands 4, he admitted his ignorance and mentioned that it would be publisher 2K Games who would determine the price. The question was prompted by a contemporary trend among companies increasing game prices to $80 for new releases.

Following the presentation, a fan queried Pitchford on social media regarding a possible retail price of $80. In response, he made his “true supporters” remark.

At PAX, Pitchford expressed that the current period in the video game industry is particularly challenging economically.

He explained that on one hand, we have a market where sellers aim to move as many items as they can while being cautious about price-conscious buyers. Some sellers might not want prices to rise, even those setting the prices themselves. However, others recognize that production costs are escalating and packaging has associated fees. This is an attempt to put the statement in simpler terms without losing its original meaning.

In comparison to Borderlands 3, Borderlands 4 is being developed with a budget significantly larger than double its predecessor, according to Pitchford. He expressed his desire for the game to sell as many copies as possible so that Gearbox can use these earnings to invest in future projects. Simultaneously, Pitchford and his team view themselves as artists, and they aim for Borderlands 4 to appeal to the broadest range of players possible.

“So it’s a weird thing,” he said about pricing dynamics.

Nintendo and Microsoft are both setting their respective games such as Mario Kart World and some upcoming titles at a price point of $80. In contrast, the game Mafia: The Old Country by 2K Games will be available for $50, aiming to attract players with limited spare time.

In a announcement, it has been revealed that Borderlands 4 will be available starting September 12 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, it was mentioned that the game will also be released for the Nintendo Switch 2, however, a specific launch date remains undisclosed at this time.
