Borderlands 3 Surges In Popularity After Movie Bombs At Box Office

As a long-time fan of the Borderlands franchise, I must say that the recent release of the movie adaptation has been a rollercoaster ride for us diehards. On one hand, it’s sparked a renewed interest in the games, with Borderlands 3 seeing a significant surge in players on Steam and other platforms. It’s like a virtual Pandora call to arms!

Since the release of the Borderlands movie a week ago, it’s been met with both commercial and critical underperformance. However, an unexpected outcome might be a surge in curiosity about the video games. It seems that moviegoers wanting to delve into the original content could be responsible for this rise. As a result, Borderlands 3 has observed a moderate uptick in players and has achieved its highest number of concurrent users on Steam since February 2023. Based on data from SteamDB, the game reached a peak of 12,379 simultaneous players, marking a significant jump compared to past months.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Borderlands 2 has been experiencing a significant surge in popularity lately, boasting around 7,938 peak players on Steam. While it may not reach the heights of the initial boom, I’ve also noticed a resurgence in the player base for the original Borderlands and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel games. It’s important to note that these figures only represent Steam users, so when we consider players from the Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4, the total player count is likely much higher.

It’s worth noting that Gearbox Software has introduced an interesting option in Borderlands 3. With a fully leveled character and a completed campaign under your belt, you can now bypass the entire main storyline using a new character.

With this update, you can immediately start the Borderlands 3 endgame using a fresh, fully-leveled character. This is particularly beneficial since it might take several dozen hours to reach max level with a single Vault Hunter in the game. If you’ve been keen on experimenting with other characters but found the campaign repetitive or felt it pales in comparison to the movie’s narrative, this feature offers a convenient way to resume your adventures without having to replay the entire campaign.

At TopMob, we gave the Borderlands movie a rating of 2 out of 10, labeling it as an ordinary and forgettable watch. Other reviewers have been even more critical, with some going so far as to call it a disappointing flop and unoriginal.
