All bets are off.
“Bookie” has been canceled by Max after two seasons, EbMaster has learned exclusively.
The comedy series features Sebastian Maniscalco as a longtime bookmaker in Los Angeles, battling to stay afloat amidst the legalization of sports betting, all while dealing with volatile clients. Originating from the minds of Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay, the program made its debut on the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform in November 2023, followed by the launch of its second season in December 2024.
The creative duo Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay, along with their side-splitting ensemble, including Sebastian Maniscalco, provided two seasons of humor as they explored the intriguing realm of sports betting. Unfortunately, we’ve decided not to proceed with a third season. However, we are thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with such an exceptionally talented group on this hilarious comedy about sports gambling.
The series “Bookie” featured Omar Dorsey as Rayfield “Ray” Ballard, Andrea Anders as Sandra, Vanessa Ferlito as Lorraine Colavito, Jorge Garcia as Hector, Maxim Swinton as Anthony, Rob Corddry as Walt Dinty, and Selina Kaye as Janelle. The recurring cast included Arnetia Walker, Toby Huss, and Dale Dickey. Notably, Ray Romano, Laraine Newman, Zach Braff, and Charlie Sheen were among the many distinguished guest stars who appeared throughout the show’s 16 episodes.
Produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television, the series known as ‘Bookie’ was overseen by Chuck Lorre, Bakay, Maniscalco, and Judi Marmel in their executive roles.
Maniscalco, a well-known stand-up comedian who frequently fills arenas, chatted with EbMaster in December about honing his acting abilities. He expressed that he appreciated it when Lorre and Bakay laughed at his performances on set because “it confirms that what I’m doing is humorous. As a comedian, I thrive on laughter. I appreciate the validation that what I’m doing is funny through their laughter. I’m getting accustomed to working with other actors. I’m learning something new every day.” (In this version, I tried to maintain the original meaning while making it easier to read and understand.)
I, too, have had the privilege of appearing in some notable films like “Green Book,” “The Irishman,” and “Tag.” Additionally, I’ve been honored to lend my voice to the character Spike in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
