Initially, the final season of “Bones” appeared to run like a finely-tuned mechanism; however, the early stages of this long-running scientific detective series (available for streaming with Hulu) were chaotic due to a troubled lead actress, disgruntled crew members, and a network that was losing faith. A spiraling star, dissatisfied team, and faltering support from the broadcaster led to a tumultuous behind-the-scenes atmosphere during the first season. Fortunately, everything eventually came together, but lead Emily Deschanel has recently shared her honest account of the challenges faced.
During a chat on his podcast, “Fail Better,” David Duchovny (a well-known actor) brought up some intriguing details. Being close friends with the creator of “Bones” and having known Deschanel and her family for years (her father worked on “Twin Peaks”), he was privy to some behind-the-scenes issues during the first season of “Bones.” He casually inquired about these problems from Deschanel, leading to this fascinating disclosure.
During the initial season, her character found herself extremely swamped, especially due to the vast amount of highly specialized and technically accurate medical jargon she had to master. Given that she is a forensic anthropologist, this character frequently employed numerous technical terms in dialogue. Adding to her challenge was the fact that they were working long hours (14 to 16 hours a day) with minimal time for memorization, leading her to often humorously mention spending her evenings weeping in a bathtub.
As a movie enthusiast, I often find myself battling fatigue and struggling with my lines, making certain scenes feel like an uphill battle. This in turn leads me to worry that the crew may be growing frustrated due to my prolonging our already lengthy workdays. Unfortunately, this concern only serves to fuel a downward spiral, worsening my performance even further.
The space around me felt increasingly constricted, and it turns out that I was experiencing anxiety attacks without realizing it.
Amidst numerous initial issues, Deschanel arrived late on set due to a traffic hitch, escalating tensions. It seems she had a private talk with Hanson, who was also the producer, and he expressed that the management was growing apprehensive about her work dedication. Here’s a snippet of the account…
One day, it was unusual as Hart rapped on my mobile home’s door – something he rarely did. It seemed like an infrequent occurrence for him to knock on my door. He led me aside and confided that the studio had issues with your performance. They mentioned that I was habitually late and ill-prepared. Just recalling it now, I can’t help but feel emotional.
Deschanel admitted she experienced a great deal of embarrassment following their talk. She explained that it felt like being publicly reprimanded as an individual rather than just an actress. However, looking back, she realized it was beneficial for her. From then on, she never missed a filming schedule and collaborated with Hanson to create a more feasible timetable. They assigned someone to assist with pronunciation and line memorization, and occasionally left out scenes for her to prepare for the complex ones. On ‘Bones’, they eventually renewed it for a second season, at which point they were operating much smoother, with Deschanel even practicing with co-star David Boreanaz on weekends to improve their chemistry.
