Bob Costas Slams Trump’s ‘Ongoing Assaults’ on Free Press and Warns Against ‘MAGA Media’: ‘Democracy As We Know It Is Under Attack’

Bob Costas has a chilling warning for the future of journalism.

On Monday, during the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Mirror Award at the Edison Ballroom in New York (as reported by CNN), the renowned sports commentator expressed concern about persistent attacks on freedom of the press by the current administration. Costas stated that what’s currently taking place is not minor issues, but rather significant ones. They are distinctly unlike anything he has encountered during his lifetime, possibly even in the entire history of the U.S. presidency.

Costas emphasized that mainstream news organizations aren’t perfect and often have areas where they could improve or present biased narratives. However, he clarified that he wouldn’t switch to media outlets associated with the MAGA movement or Donald Trump’s perspective, as it primarily caters to his interests. Instead, he prefers to stay where he is.

In his own words, during the peak of his fame, he often received comments from fans such as, “I used to admire Bob Costas, but then he became political.” To those who hold this view, Costas replied, “Go ahead and think that way, and if you defend it, I proudly wear it as a badge of honor.

Costas worked for NBC Sports for 40 years before leaving the network in 2019. He lamented that the sports industry tends to fall short when it comes to addressing significant social and political issues, stating that it does so “regrettably” or “unfortunately.
