Blumhouse's Wolf Man Reimagines The Universal Classic With Feral New Trailer

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who has braved countless virtual haunted houses and slasher games, I eagerly await the arrival of the new Blumhouse take on the Wolf Man. The Invisible Man reboot was a chilling masterpiece that left me hiding under my blanket for days, so the bar is set high for this follow-up.

Leigh Whannell’s reinterpretation of The Invisible Man, inspired by the classic Universal Monster tale from H.G. Wells, was released in February 2020 and served as an allegory for domestic abuse. This film grossed approximately $145 million at the box office despite a production budget of only $7 million, but its success was short-lived due to the onset of the global pandemic. Now, Whannell is returning with another contemporary interpretation of a Universal monster, this time The Wolf Man. On Friday, Universal unveiled a teaser for this upcoming project and a matching poster as well.

In this upcoming movie, Christopher Abbott takes on the role of Kraven the Hunter/Larry Talbot (Wolf Man), while Julia Garner is also part of the cast, known for her work in Fantastic Four: First Steps. Jason Blum, through his production company Blumhouse Productions, is one of the producers, along with Motel Movies. Take a look at the teaser video below.

The specifics are unclear, but given similarities to the 1941 original or its 2010 reboot, it’s possible that Talbot undergoes a transformation into a werewolf at some stage. As he straddles the boundary between human and beast, he instills fear in the town’s residents and his own family alike.

As a thrilled fan, I was eagerly anticipating the teaser reveal of the new Wolf Man design, but it turned out that fans at Universal Hollywood’s Horror Nights got a special treat instead! They were given a sneak peek at the final design of the Wolf Man, showcased in a display with an actor in costume subtly stalking around as part of the event.

The design is in line with how the Invisible Man was reimagined and doesn’t look like a wolf here, especially compared to Rick Baker’s take on the 2010 remake. However, this is a mere adaptation of the look itself and will hopefully look better in motion on the screen. It’s also possibly not the fully-realized wolf form as well.

The Wolf Man hits theaters on January 17, 2015.
