After the triumph of “Five Nights at Freddy’s“, it’s been revealed that they are working on a movie adaption from another horror game. This announcement was made at the “Business of Fear Event” held in Hollywood on June 3rd.
Blumhouse has officially unveiled their plans for creating a movie based on the renowned paranormal horror video game, Phasmophobia. As of now, no distributor or release date has been disclosed. In partnership with Kinetic Games Limited, the creators of Phasmophobia, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are producing this project together. According to the original game, players collaborate to accomplish a contract that requires them to determine which type of ghost is haunting a specific location.
Much like Five Nights at Freddy’s gained massive fame in 2020 due to numerous online streamers playing it, Phasmophobia has broken records with over 23 million global sales, making it a trailblazing title in multiplayer horror gaming. By the close of October 2020, it even outperformed titles like Fall Guys and other pre-orders to become the week’s best-selling game.
This game combines captivating paranormal exploration with cooperative play, earning a devoted fanbase as it goes. It was awarded Best Debut Game at the 2020 Game Awards and Kinetic Games was recognized as Best Debut Developer in 2021 at the Game Developers Choice Awards.
In 2024, Blumhouse announced that the Paranormal subgenre was one of the 24 active subgenres in horror movies, according to a study they conducted. This study, known as The 2024 Genre Categorization Survey, involved 2,000 participants and aimed to gauge the current trends in horror among audiences by categorizing 100 notable horror films from the past half-century into different subgenres.
At the inaugural “The Business of Fear” event, Blumhouse executives, including CEO/Founder Jason Blum, talked about how horror has evolved over time and how various subgenres such as Survival, Slasher, and Supernatural have aided studios in catering to the diverse preferences of their audiences. This discussion paved the way for productions like “Phasmaphobia” to get approved.
Blumhouse Is Also Producing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
The movie version of Five Nights at Freddy’s by Blumhouse Productions turned out to be a huge financial triumph for them, earning more than $297 million since its debut, surpassing Split (starring James McAvoy) from 2016. This demonstrated that the gaming series’ fans were eager to back the film franchise. As a result, Universal Pictures promptly commissioned a sequel.
In the upcoming sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s, actors Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard will reprise their characters from the original movie. Skeet Ulrich, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Teo Briones have also been added to the cast, though specific details about their roles are not yet known. As of now, plot details for the film remain vague, but it is confirmed that the iconic and chilling animatronics will once again be causing chaos in the world.
At present, there hasn’t been any announced release date for the film adaptation of Blumhouse’s Phasmaphobia. On the other hand, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 5.
