Blue Note Jazz Club Moves Forward at Hollywood ArcLight Complex — Will the Cinerama Dome Be Next?

The mission to re-open Hollywood’s ArcLight Cinemas and the historic Cinerama Dome continues.

Last Thursday, a public hearing took place in the morning at the Office of Zoning Administration in Los Angeles, covering both the local theater complex and the upcoming Blue Note Jazz Club. The purpose of these hearings was to discuss the possibility of selling and serving an array of alcoholic drinks on site within the complex for consumption.

The entity presenting the application was Dome Center, LLC /Robertson Property Group, a subsidiary belonging to The Decurion Corp., a business long associated with the ownership of the Dome and ArcLight properties. In this instance, land use consultant Elizabeth Peterson from the Elizabeth Peterson Group spoke on behalf of the property’s proprietors.

In my talk, I shared that I aimed to infuse a hint of the enduring spirit symbolized by the Cinerama Dome. You see, they’re putting in a tremendous effort to revamp the whole venue. Furthermore, I highlighted Robertson Property Group’s dedication – now a part of Decurion Corp – towards updating and preserving this iconic property.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, theaters like ArcLight and Cinerama Dome were closed down and remain shuttered, even with some interior renovations taking place. Previously vibrant weekends now seem deserted, as the area around them is mostly empty. Eateries Veggie Grill and Wildbird are still operational, but they don’t see much foot traffic. Above these establishments, the 24-hour Fitness Gym continues to operate.

2023 saw speculation that the Cinerama Dome might reopen as early as 2025. The revamped facility has been proposed to be renamed ‘Cinerama Hollywood’. A liquor license application for this venue was submitted back in 2021.

Thursday’s hearings gave a glimmer of hope to the plan to revitalize the once bustling area.

Peterson announced that Blue Note L.A. is set to take over both the previous Blue C. Sushi location and the old Stella Bara spot on Ivar Blvd. and Sunset Blvd. This new development will mark the third restaurant in the complex, offering both dining and entertainment experiences.

A second hearing immediately following delved deeper into the plans for the Blue Note Jazz Club.

Peterson stated, “Blue Note has hosted countless legendary jazz musicians and has grown its presence worldwide with venues in cities such as Tokyo, Milan, Napa, California, and now Hollywood. Notably, it’s also found in Los Angeles.” She further mentioned, “We are optimistic that, similar to New York, Blue Note will evolve into a cultural landmark within the city of Los Angeles.

The plan outlined in the proposition aims to transform Blue Note, focusing on nurturing the vibrant jazz culture of Los Angeles, particularly supporting up-and-coming musicians. The Blue Note establishment will boast two distinct areas – a primary showroom designed for headlining artists and a second area affectionately named the B-Side.

At a question and answer session, EbMaster inquired about Peterson’s plans for reviving the Cinerama Dome. Peterson responded, “The ownership of the property is once again Dome Center LLC, managed by Robinson Property Group. They have contacted me recently and are now discussing the possibility of reopening the Cinerama Dome. As of now, we don’t have specific plans, but I believe they wanted to initiate these discussions promptly.” Peterson further added, “The owners are determined to proceed with the site’s development. Naturally, the theater would be part of this plan. All I can share is that they have reached out to me regarding this matter.

Peterson made it clear that discussions regarding the matter continue. She stated at the hearing, “The aim is to bring the entire property back to its original state.

Currently, the AMC theaters located at The Grove, Burbank, and Century City are managing significant movie screenings and high-profile premieres. Meanwhile, Los Angeles locals remain optimistic about the potential reopening of the Cinerama Dome, whether it be alongside or independently from the ArcLight theater complex.
