In 2020, independent game developer Max Mraz unveiled Yarntown, an unofficial reinterpretation of Bloodborne transformed into a Zelda-style 16-bit game. Now, Mraz is distributing the demo for his latest original creation, Tombwater, and it appears even more thrilling than his prior project.
Tombwater
In essence, Tombwater is an action-RPG set in a 2D world reminiscent of the Old West. The game’s aesthetic harks back to the 16-bit era, a style that Mraz previously employed in Yarntown. Unfortunately, the title town has succumbed to Eldritch monsters and the sheriff is nowhere to be found. With no one else to rely on, it’s up to a lone gunslinger to confront these otherworldly terrors using every weapon he possesses. The protagonist isn’t defenseless, but he may still find himself outmatched by the incomprehensible creatures that lie ahead.
The demonstration functions primarily as an introduction to the game’s storyline, occurring at the beginning when the protagonist, a gunslinger, explores a nearly abandoned mining camp. During this phase, players will become acquainted with the game’s controls, weaponry, tools, potions, and enchantments. It seems that elements of Metroidvania are incorporated, possibly requiring players to revisit previously explored areas.
As per the game’s explanation, a total of five spells are accessible to the player in the demonstration version. However, it’s important to note that using these spells excessively may lead to repercussions. Furthermore, there’s a climactic boss battle at the end, which will wrap up the demo and serve as a prelude for the main storyline.
Collaborating with Midwest Games, Jason Mraz’s Moth Atlas project is planning to unveil the Tombwater demo on Steam. As of now, there isn’t a fixed launch date for Tombwater, but it’s anticipated to be available later in this year exclusively on PC platforms.
