Blizzard Tries to Reverse One of the Most Controversial Decisions in History of Popular Shooter. Much-Loved 6-on-6 Battles Return to Overwatch 2, Even if Temporarily

As a long-time fan of Overwatch, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia at the news that Blizzard is considering reintroducing 6v6 team battles in Overwatch 2. It brings me back to my early days of playing the game when the 6v6 format was the norm, and every match felt like a grand clash between two teams.

Approximately ten years have elapsed since Overwatch’s initial beta tests, and following its official launch, the game has amassed a vast following, largely due to Blizzard’s continuous updates. For some current players of Overwatch 2, the hero shooter series’ second installment, it may be hard to recall the early days of the game, including the 6v6 battles that were subsequently changed to 5v5 encounters in the sequel. Nevertheless, dedicated fans have been fervently requesting Blizzard to include six-player teams in Overwatch 2.

Currently, Blizzard has shared detailed information regarding battles where twelve heroes engage in combat on a single map (Blizzard referred to this as “12 vs 12” matches). They also disclosed reasons for their previous hesitance towards implementing this game mode again.

In six-versus-six matches, skirmishes often remained unresolved until the activation of ultimate abilities. The intention behind the creation of five-versus-five, however, was to elevate the overall gameplay experience, despite sacrificing some thrilling moments that come with the use of ultimate abilities.

In addition to the issues with balance, there were also prolonged waits before matches began and chaos during six-player team battles. Nevertheless, Blizzard intends to reassess this well-loved system and schedule events for Overwatch 2 in the upcoming weeks, allowing players to try out the revised format of team compositions.

The exact beginning date and length of the 6 vs 6 battles are undetermined, but the creators emphasize that acquiring input and adjusting the gameplay will take considerable time. This is mainly attributed to complications surrounding balance, wait times, and technical concerns. Therefore, it appears that these events may debut no sooner than the upcoming season.
