Blizzard Is Reportedly Trying To Make A StarCraft Shooter, Again

As a seasoned StarCraft fan with over two decades of allegiance to this epic galactic saga, I can hardly contain my excitement at the latest development! The news that Blizzard is giving the StarCraft shooter another go after two previous attempts has me on the edge of my Zerg-infested battlefield.

Since Blizzard ceased development on StarCraft II in 2020 to concentrate on the franchise’s future, it has been relatively quiet for the game. However, recent reports suggest that Blizzard may be attempting to create another StarCraft-themed shooter, following two earlier attempts which did not succeed.

Jason Schreier, author of Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, recently shared on IGN’s Unlocked podcast that the surviving members of the team behind Blizzard’s scrapped survival game are nurturing a StarCraft shooter project. It’s said that this endeavor is being supervised by Dan Hay, an experienced developer who has previously worked on Ubisoft’s Far Cry series.

Despite StarCraft boasting a deep mythology that could make for captivating narratives, Blizzard has yet to successfully transform it into a shooter game. The initial effort, StarCraft: Ghost, was initiated in 2001 and remained in development limbo for many years until Blizzard ultimately decided to discontinue it. Another shooter game based on StarCraft, known as StarCraft: Ares, was allegedly scrapped in 2019.

A few weeks ago, it was revealed that StarCraft Remastered and StarCraft 2 would be joining Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass soon, with their release set for November 5th. It’s hoped that the reception of these games will encourage Activision Blizzard (now owned by Microsoft) to take steps towards developing StarCraft 3.
