Blizzard, the company behind Overwatch 2, has denied claims that new in-game sprays were made using artificial intelligence. They’ve stated that the sprays were not created with AI.
Players noticed what appeared to be evidence on platforms like X and Reddit that the in-game sprays featuring characters Venture, Juno, and the new Hero Wuyang were created using artificial intelligence.
I was scrolling through X and saw someone point out how good the hair and line art looked on a spray featuring Venture and Juno posing together. But then another user chimed in saying there were some really odd mistakes – stuff you wouldn’t expect from a professional artist. They even mentioned Juno’s eyebrows were messed up, like one was drawn *over* her hair and the other *under* it. It was a pretty strange detail!
In a statement to Kotaku, a Blizzard spokesperson said: “The sprays referenced are artist-made.”

Blizzard has faced similar claims about AI-generated content before, specifically regarding Overwatch 2. Back in August, a post on the official Overwatch X (formerly Twitter) account advertising a partnership with Youtooz included artwork that many people thought was created by AI.
The post was taken down, and the official Overwatch account explained that the artwork was created by a third-party vendor Blizzard uses for its online store. They stated that they expect all images to be originally created by artists, following their established guidelines.
In April, players claimed Blizzard used AI-generated voices for some German dialogue in a recent Overwatch 2 event featuring characters from Gundam. A Blizzard representative responded on the game’s official forums, stating the claim was false and explaining that some localized voice lines had been temporarily removed or altered.
There’s ongoing debate about using AI in video game creation. While many gamers react negatively to AI-created content, major companies like Sony are still exploring AI tools, including large language models. For example, reports from 2023 suggest that Blizzard developed its own AI, called Blizzard Diffusion, to help generate concept art.
