Blizzard Boss Says More TV Shows And Movies Are Possible

2016’s Warcraft film, based on a video game, ranks among the most financially successful video game adaptations. A significant portion of its earnings came from China, but critical reception was mixed. However, Blizzard Entertainment, the company behind Warcraft, hasn’t closed the door on future attempts to bring their franchises to cinema or television. In a recent interview, Blizzard president Johanna Faries stated that they are considering various options for expanding their franchises.

She informed Windows Central that she wasn’t able to reveal any specific details at the moment, but emphasized that as a team, they view themselves not just as Blizzard Games or Blizzard Gaming, but rather as Blizzard Entertainment in its entirety.

She remarked, “Our renowned intellectual properties hold immense potential, branching out into numerous creative and engaging realms. It’s crucial for us to act with care and responsibility as guardians of these franchises. Not every idea will work, and the way we implement them is vital. We strive to contribute positively to the entertainment industry in a broad sense, enabling Blizzard to remain a symbol of that enchanting storytelling and joy-fostering spirit.

The Warcraft film had been in development for quite a while, experiencing several major transformations along the way. For instance, Sam Raimi, known for Spider-Man, stepped away from directing duties. Eventually, Duncan Jones (known for Moon and Source Code) took over the project. Jones mentioned that Raimi’s initial concept had some issues, and Blizzard Entertainment also shared this viewpoint.

Lately, the ex-CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick, stated that he believes Warcraft is among the very worst films ever produced.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel pretty darn impressed with how Warcraft performed on the global box office scene. It raked in an impressive $440 million worldwide, landing it as the fourth highest-grossing video game film of all time. However, it only managed to pull in $47 million here in the U.S., which is just 11% of its total earnings. But don’t let that fool you – China was where this movie truly shone, accounting for a whopping 50% of the film’s overall gross with over $225 million in ticket sales!

In the past, Activision Blizzard created a subsidiary called Activision Blizzard Studios, tasked with adapting their game franchises for film and television. The only production to emerge was the Netflix show Skylanders Academy. Since then, the leaders of Activision Blizzard Studios have departed, leaving uncertainty about the future of the division following Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard.
