Bleecker Street Buys ‘The Friend,’ Touching Drama Starring Naomi Watts and a Great Dane Named Bing

As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the labyrinth of cinema halls from the bustling streets of New York to the quaint corners of Paris, I can confidently say that “The Friend” is a film destined to touch the hearts of many. The story, adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s acclaimed novel, promises an emotional rollercoaster ride that delves into the complexities of friendship, grief, and the profound bond between humans and their canine companions.

Naomi Watts and a very big dog are heading to cinemas.

“The Friend,” an emotionally resonant drama revolving around a writer and editor who inherits her literary mentor’s Great Dane after his suicide, has been purchased by Bleecker Street. This independent studio secured the North American distribution rights for an unspecified amount, which is somewhat unexpected given the film’s positive reception at fall film festivals such as Telluride and Toronto. The delay in sale underscores the cautious approach that studios are taking when purchasing projects following the COVID-19 pandemic. The indie and art house cinema market is yet to fully recover from the pandemic’s impact.

The movie titled “The Friend” was created by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, known for their previous works such as “The Deep End” and “What Maisie Knew.” This film features a star-studded cast including Bill Murray, Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni, and Ann Dowd. However, it’s the 145-pound Great Dane named Bing who truly captivates audiences with his on-screen presence. Bleecker Street has scheduled a theatrical release for “The Friend” in early 2025.

The film is a screen adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel, which won the National Book Award and shares the same title. Previously, McGehee and Siegel collaborated with Bleecker Street for the release of “Montana Story” in 2021. Their new production, however, was developed under Big Creek Projects, a recently established production banner by McGehee, Siegel, and Mike Spreter. Liza Chasin’s 3dot Productions also contributed to the filmmaking process. Margaret Chernin and Watts served as executive producers for this project.

Andew Karpen, founder and CEO of Bleecker Street, commented: “The Friend” is a classic tale set in New York City, boasting outstanding writing and heartfelt performances that highlight the importance of friendship, dealing with grief, and the unique solace animals offer. As a company based in New York, we are ideally suited to house this film, and we’re thrilled to collaborate once more with Scott and David to share it with viewers next year.

We’re overjoyed that people are responding positively to our movie, and we’re equally excited to be collaborating with Bleecker Street again. They have a reputation for supporting independent filmmaking and theatrical distribution, and we can’t wait for them to present ‘The Friend’ in local theaters next year,” said Siegel & McGehee.

The agreement was worked out between Bleecker Street’s representatives, Miranda King and Avy Eschenasy, and CAA Media Finance, who spoke on behalf of the filmmakers during negotiations.

10 years ago, Bleecker Street was established, and they recently celebrated their anniversary. Their upcoming lineup features “The Return,” a movie starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, as well as “Hard Truths,” the new film from Mike Leigh, which brings him together with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who previously worked with him in “Secrets & Lies.
