Blake Shelton’s new singing show, *The Road*, will debut on October 19, 2025. But his former co-stars from *The Voice* haven’t stopped teasing him! Even though he left the show two years ago after five seasons, they still playfully poke fun at him – and it seems Niall Horan was the first to start the good-natured ribbing.
As a huge fan of *The Voice*, I’ve seen a lot of coaches come and go, but Blake Shelton was always the one stirring things up – he had these great, playful rivalries with Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and even Carson Daly! I always thought Niall Horan looked up to Blake, almost like a son, so I was really surprised to see Niall playfully shading him in a recent Instagram video.

Wow, I didn’t realize Niall Horan could sing country so well! He and Blake Shelton would make an amazing duo – I wonder who taught Niall that unique yodeling style he showed off at the end?
Niall Horan, formerly of the boy band One Direction, recently covered Thomas Rhett’s song “Old Tricks,” which also includes a collaboration with Blake Shelton. He jokingly said he couldn’t resist trying his own version for his friend.
Thomas and I have been friends for a long time. It was a bit of a surprise when he chose Blake Shelton to sing on the track, but he eventually explained his reasoning to me.
Okay, this is a little bit of playful teasing, but I was still surprised to hear Niall Horan say on the current season of *The Voice* that he’d always consider Blake Shelton his father. This came after Michael Bublé jokingly tried to take that role!
This feels like something straight from Carson Daly’s playbook, and indeed, *The Voice* host commented on Niall Horan’s performance of “Old Tricks,” comparing it to that of his *Barmageddon* co-host, saying:
WAAAAYY better than [Blake Shelton’s] version!
Though they often playfully teased each other, Blake Shelton and Carson Daly became very close friends during their 12 years working together on *The Voice*. Their friendship deepened so much that Daly actually performed Shelton’s wedding ceremony with Gwen Stefani, and even encouraged them to write personal vows. This inspiration led Shelton to write their wedding song, “We Can Reach the Stars,” which is included on the deluxe version of his album, *Body Language*.
Even though Blake Shelton isn’t appearing alongside Niall Horan or Carson Daly now, he’s still dedicated to supporting new country musicians. His latest show, *The Road*—created with Taylor Sheridan—documents twelve rising stars as they tour with Keith Urban, gaining valuable experience opening for him at each show.
