As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of censorship controversies – from the banning of “The Last Temptation of Christ” to the infamous “Showgirls” VHS ban in Australia. Now, it seems that Qatar has joined the ranks of countries with a penchant for censorship, this time targeting Blake Lively’s latest romance drama, “It Ends With Us.”
Blake Lively’s romance drama “It Ends With Us” has been banned in Qatar due to kissing scenes.
The PG-13 movie produced by Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios has been prevented from being shown in cinemas, according to reliable film sources, who shared this information with EbMaster.
In “It Ends With Us”, there are several passionate kissing moments, as well as a somewhat intimate encounter where the characters choose to maintain their clothing.
In Qatar, films are often subjected to stringent censorship and have a history of being banned, such as Greta Gerwig’s feminist comedy “Barbie,” the action-packed “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Eternals” – all rated PG-13 in the U.S. Qatar has also censored movies like the R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings,” where Jennifer Lawrence appears nude, the “Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear,” which includes a gay kiss, Pixar’s “Onward,” due to an obscure mention of a lesbian character, and “Anyone but You,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, because it contains steamy romantic scenes.
In 2021, Disney chose not to make changes demanded for censorship regarding Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” by Qatar. The requested cuts were in relation to Anybodies, a character who is transgender and played by non-binary actor Iris Menas. Movies containing LGBTQ themes or characters have often been subjected to censorship in countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and even China.
In the film “It Ends With Us,” directed by Justin Baldoni, we follow the story of a florist named Lily, who finds herself in love with a neurosurgeon. However, when Lily reconnects with her old friend Brandon, Ryle becomes envious, leading their relationship to take a sinister turn.
The film version of Colleen Hoover’s well-loved romance novel was made on a budget of just $25 million, and it’s anticipated to bring in a profit. It started strong with $7 million in Thursday previews, causing some analysts to predict earnings ranging from $40 million to $50 million.
Deadline first reported the news.
