As a seasoned cinephile with a soft spot for poignant romances and powerful narratives that leave lasting impressions, I must say “It Ends With Us” has undoubtedly made its mark on my cinematic journey. Blake Lively‘s dedication to both her acting and producing roles is nothing short of commendable, as she’s poured her heart and soul into this project, leaving little room for sleep or leisure time.
Blake Lively reveals that bringing “It Ends With Us,” the romantic movie adaptation by Sony Pictures based on Colleen Hoover’s top-selling novel, required almost all her energy and resources.
At the New York premiere of the movie on Tuesday, Lively, who portrays Lily Bloom, expressed that working off-camera was incredibly significant to her. She told EbMaster that the producer role consumed her more than acting as Lily did, and she took care of everything related to this film, from beginning to end.
“It Ends With Us” mirrors its original storyline by chronicling Bloom’s journey as she becomes captivated by the alluring neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid, following a series of chance encounters. As Ryle’s aggressive behavior surfaces, Lily is compelled to confront her past, having endured a similar pattern of domestic abuse in her childhood. In 2022, the book gained immense popularity on “BookTok,” TikTok’s literary community, catapulting it to fame much like influencers promote products, and selling an astounding four million copies, making it a massive success for author Colleen Hoover.
“Working on this movie drained my love, passion, energy, perseverance, and even my sleep,” she explained. “But as a result, I’ve never felt more ownership over a project. I enter the premiere with immense pride for what we achieved. For the first time, I can step away knowing I poured everything I had into it, and I’m proud of it. It’s one of the best experiences of my life, undoubtedly a career highlight.”
The movie “It Ends With Us” was directed and co-starred by Justin Baldoni, who portrayed Ryle. He obtained the film rights from Hoover in 2019, before the novel gained its passionate fanbase on TikTok. At Tuesday’s premiere, he said it was either luck or fate. Initially, he had planned the movie as a smaller independent production, but Sony turned it into a major blockbuster.
For those unfamiliar with the book “It Ends With Us”, the movie seems very much like two distinct films. Initially, it appears as a lush, romantic tale that gently captivates its viewers. However, when the narrative takes an unexpected turn towards violence, it challenges viewers to reconsider everything they’ve witnessed so far, including their own perceptions and judgments. According to Baldoni, this is precisely the intention behind the storytelling.
“He explained to EbMaster, ‘Our story mirrors life itself.’ We took great care in consulting with survivors to ensure accuracy and truthfulness. Over and over again, I found that relationships initially seem flawless – filled with romance, love, and intimacy. We aimed to accurately portray the genuine experiences of these women.”
In the film, Bloom, portrayed by Lively, presents an untrustworthy account of her life, even acknowledging this herself in certain scenes. Alongside the viewers, we witness the seemingly perfect relationship between Bloom and Ryle unfold, characterized by stunning attire, wealth, and physical attractiveness. However, it isn’t until Bloom herself discovers it that the film delves into the hidden, troubled aspects of their romance. Despite some criticism for romanticizing domestic abuse in the book, Baldoni argues that maintaining a perspective within Bloom’s experiences allows the audience to grasp her decisions and traumas more effectively.
“In the final scenes of the film, Lily is finally confronted by the audience when she’s reached a point where she can no longer evade her circumstances,” Baldoni shared with EbMaster. “We designed the movie this way to pay tribute to all the women experiencing similar struggles. I hope they recognize themselves in the story, reach out to their closest friend for support, and seek help.”
“The book ‘It Ends With Us’ finishes at the very point where Hoover’s 2022 sequel, titled ‘It Starts With Us’, picks up. At the launch event, Hoover mentioned that a group of fans were consulted to review the screenplay during its production process. She stated that she didn’t have control over whether a movie sequel would be produced (as she needed to consult with her lawyer first).”
She expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I’d be more than happy if they decide to make another film. I think they’ve done an excellent job with the first one.”
Baldoni remained silent on the topic of extending the franchise as well. “I’m not at liberty to discuss that,” he stated. “However, I can only wish that it resonates with people on a deep level, sparking conversations among friends, and if fortune favors us, the financial success will naturally follow.”
