In some instances, it can be challenging for a genre-specific site to decide if a game fits our category, as was the case with Blades of Fire. While it doesn’t perfectly fit the RPG mold, it has elements that could attract fans of that genre. We occasionally broaden our review scope and cover games like Visual Novels, but we do make exceptions for titles that offer an appeal to genre enthusiasts.
The latest creation from MercurySteam is titled “Blades of Fire.” This game stands out with unique features that set it apart from other games in the market. For instance, combat involves strategically attacking different areas of an enemy’s body. Each face button corresponds to a cardinal direction for attack. Weapons may possess one or even three attributes, depending on whether they are used for stabbing, slashing, or striking.
When targeting an enemy, the color of their outline indicates how effective your current weapon will be against them, taking into account factors such as the armor they wear and where it is located on their body. This includes intricate details like the type of armor they have equipped and the specific part of their body it covers.
For instance, when using a broadsword against an armored opponent with a helmet, it’s usually more strategic to aim elsewhere rather than targeting the head. However, if you’re equipped with a hammer, the helmet becomes less of a barrier. Typically, you’d be slashing with your broadsword, but in certain situations, you can use it to jab at enemies instead – although not as effectively as regular swinging. The performance of each weapon, considering the various ways they can be employed, isn’t solely dependent on modifications during construction, but also on the materials chosen for forging.
This system is truly captivating, and the means by which players obtain those blueprints is just as intriguing. Interestingly, your primary character’s sidekick isn’t particularly skilled in combat, but he possesses a unique ability to create notes from defeated foes – with enough battles against enemies wielding similar weapons, he’ll eventually have a functional blueprint for the forge. Statues dotting the game world showcase soldiers armed with specific weapons, and if you’ve successfully crafted the weapon they’re carrying, you can revisit these statues to claim a reward.
In essence, each part of this game appears isolated, yet it’s evident that you can revisit earlier locations whenever you wish. Moreover, the statues serve as hints that there are good reasons to explore old grounds again. It’s unclear how Blades of Fire will develop in terms of RPG mechanics, but it offers enhancements to your health and stamina, as well as new materials for crafting weapons, resource collection, and other features. This could certainly pique the interest of RPG enthusiasts.
I’m not certain if we’ll completely explore Blades of Fire, but let me tell you, my curiosity is definitely piqued! The game, Blades of Fire, debuts for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (exclusively on Epic) on May 22nd.
