Blackpink’s Jisoo to Star in Korean Zombie Series ‘Newtopia’

As an ardent follower of the dynamic world of Korean entertainment, I must say that Jisoo, the enchanting member of Blackpink, continues to astound me with her versatility and ambition. From captivating audiences worldwide with her musical talents as part of Blackpink, to now leading the cast in a gripping zombie thriller series, “Newtopia,” she truly embodies the spirit of a modern-day Renaissance woman.

Jisoo, who’s part of the renowned South Korean music group Blackpink, has been officially announced as the main actor in the forthcoming zombie-themed suspense series titled “Newtopia.”

The series, produced by Coupang Play, follows the story of two lovers struggling in a Seoul overrun by zombies. Actor Park Jung-min plays one character, who first encounters a zombie epidemic during his obligatory military service. Meanwhile, Jisoo (Kim Ji-soo) portrays his girlfriend, an engineer with a fresh job waiting for him to return from the military. As they are apart, each moves across Seoul and battles off zombie attacks in an attempt to reunite.

The digital arm of South Korean e-commerce behemoth Coupang, known as Coupang Play, announced that a series they’re producing has been co-written by Han Jin-won, who collaborated on the Academy Award-winning “Parasite” with Bong Joon-ho, and Ji Ho-jin, responsible for Disney+’s hit “A Shop for Killers.” The filming is already wrapped up, and the series, originally called “Influenza,” is slated to debut in 2025, though the exact release date remains undisclosed.

The upcoming TV show marks Yoon Sung-hyun’s first venture into television directing. He is renowned for his works such as “Bleak Night” from 2011 and the action-packed thriller “Time to Hunt.”

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been thrilled to see Jisoo grace the screens in various cameo appearances across popular Korean TV series. In 2020, she took on a significant role in the captivating period action-comedy series, “Snowdrop.” She also had a supporting role in the enchanting fantasy drama, “Dr Cheon and the Lost Talisman.” Rumors swirl that she’s set to star in “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint,” an eagerly anticipated multi-part film adaptation of the beloved webtoon.

Towards the end of last year, Blackpink extended their group agreement with YG Entertainment, the company that propelled them to superstardom. However, the four members did not renew their individual contracts. Rose joined The Black Label, while the remaining three started their own independent labels. Now, each is pursuing solo endeavors separately.

In the realm of e-commerce, Coupang stands out by offering a swift same-day delivery service for a variety of consumer products, effectively holding its ground against major international competitors. While its streaming platform has had limited influence in South Korea’s entertainment sector, it has generated buzz with local adaptations such as “Saturday Night Live” and the TV series “One Ordinary Day,” which is a Korean rendition of the 2008 BBC show “Criminal Justice.”
