Black Panther Spinoff Reveals Major Hero and Unexpected Iron Fist Return

The upcoming TV lineup for 2025 boasts some excellent programs that will soon entertain viewers. One notable series is sure to delight fans of “Black Panther,” as the Marvel spinoff show, titled “Eyes of Wakanda,” promises to share exciting stories about heroes who are on a mission to retrieve and safeguard stolen Wakandan technology across various periods in history. It’s also worth mentioning that there are rumors suggesting a popular Marvel hero from previous live-action productions might receive an updated appearance in the MCU.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that during this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, Variety sat down for an insightful chat with Todd Harris, the creative mind behind the Disney+ series. In this exclusive conversation, Harris provided fascinating insights into their upcoming anthology series like never before. Titled “Eyes of Wakanda“, this captivating production is slated to premiere on August 5th. Interestingly, it seems that Harris and his team have managed to seamlessly incorporate an unexpectedly ‘Rand-esque’ (or not) aspect into the series, making it a true blast from the past.

There will be an Iron Fist in here, and not the Iron Fist you expect.

I haven’t come across that name in quite some time. Reading that quote took me by surprise at first. It was only recently that Netflix produced a live-action series centered around Iron Fist, featuring the Danny Rand version of the character, portrayed by Finn Jones.

As a film enthusiast, I must confess that I found the series in question to stir up quite a storm among viewers, unlike its fellow streaming shows. A significant factor contributing to this was the scarcity of times Iron Fist utilized his namesake powers. Additionally, the choice to cast an Asian character with a Caucasian actor sparked debate, which is understandable given the character’s cultural origins.

Despite some challenging aspects, one might expect Marvel Studios to leverage the “Eyes of Wakanda” spin-off as an opportunity to reintegrate those storylines into the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This has been demonstrated by the revival of “Daredevil” through the original Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” and its recent narrative shifts.

Given that Jon Bernthal’s character, The Punisher, and Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones have joined the series, one might expect they’d continue to keep The Defenders united. Could it be possible that Danny Rand was ‘disappeared’ by the Blip and returned without his powers? However, I have a feeling that such a straightforward comic-inspired solution won’t be the case here.

Disney Plus and Hulu Package: Starting at $10.99 a Month

For as low as $10.99 per month (or $19.99 ad-free), the Disney+/Hulu Bundle is here to offer you a variety of entertainment options! Whether you prefer the family-friendly adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or want to catch up on adult-oriented series like Daredevil: Born Again, it’s all available. If you were a fan of Netflix’s Iron Fist, that series is still accessible for streaming. However, if you wish to watch The Defenders, you’ll need to head over to the Hulu side. Take advantage of this offer now!

It seems to me that the phrase “The Iron Fist you’d expect” not being what we get suggests that Marvel Studios is listening to past criticism about the original Iron Fist and making changes to the character. Given the meticulous representation of Wakandan culture in “Eyes of Wakanda,” and considering the recasting of the Mandarin character in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” it appears likely that Marvel Multiverse might cast an Asian actor for the role, which seems like a sensible choice.

Absolutely, I might be getting a bit ahead of things since the Multiverse Saga is full of surprises and unpredictability right now. Until we get more insights with the upcoming “Eyes of Wakanda,” let’s remain patient. Remember, this four-episode series premieres exclusively on Disney+ from August 5th.
