The death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 was a shocking loss. He was a remarkably talented actor who excelled in both large-scale blockbusters and smaller, independent films, quickly establishing himself as one of the greats. He’s especially remembered for his role as T’Challa, also known as Black Panther, which he first played in Captain America: Civil War. This led to the hugely successful Black Panther movie in 2018, directed by Ryan Coogler. Given the film’s size and expectations, Coogler felt a lot of pressure, but he recently shared some helpful advice Boseman gave him during filming that kept things in perspective.
During an appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, Coogler explained:
Looking back on my relationship with him, I learned a lot, but the most important lesson was to appreciate everything. Even now, with the success of Ryan Coogler’s new film, Sinners, and doing press with the cast, I realize I wouldn’t have been fully present before. I used to get caught up in feeling overwhelmed, seeing it all as work, or battling self-doubt. When I was stressed while making Black Panther, I’d worry about failing. He would always remind me to stop thinking like that.
Ryan Coogler credits Chadwick Boseman with helping him finish the film. Coogler shared that Boseman noticed he was overly worried about potentially being fired and gently told him to stop talking like that. Despite Coogler’s own anxieties, Boseman reassured him, saying he wouldn’t let anything happen to him and urged him to relax, focus on his work, and enjoy the process.
Chadwick Boseman’s Advice Carried Over into Ryan Coogler’s Subsequent Films

Black Panther became a huge hit with both audiences and critics, ranking as the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, just after Avengers: Infinity War. It also earned the highest ratings of any Marvel Cinematic Universe film on Rotten Tomatoes, maintaining a remarkable 96% ‘Fresh’ score even today, eight years later. Beyond its box office success, the film received numerous award nominations, proving it wasn’t just a great superhero movie, but a truly outstanding film overall.

Ryan Coogler has continued to follow Chadwick Boseman’s guidance to stay focused and present in his work. Despite the enormous difficulties of making Black Panther: Wakanda Forever after Boseman’s death, and the emotional toll it took on everyone involved, Coogler successfully finished the film as a tribute to the late actor. He brought that same dedication to Sinners, a major release planned for 2025, and is expected to continue it with the third Black Panther movie, which he’s already begun working on and has a potential start date for production.
