Black Panther Devs Mourn EA’s “Stunning” And “Amazing” Game

2023 saw Electronic Arts (EA) unveil a standalone Black Panther video game from Cliffhanger Games, promising high-quality AAA gaming experience. Regrettably, EA closed down Cliffhanger Games about two years later, also cancelling the Black Panther project. Today, some of the developers who previously worked on this project are expressing their sorrow and fond memories for the “breathtaking” and “awe-inspiring” game they were involved in.

Karla Ortiz expressed on Bluesky that her group is developing a truly remarkable and breathtaking game. It’s intricate, immersive, and visually captivating. Unfortunately, I can’t share this masterpiece with the world. It’s equally painful to part ways with my team.

Freddie Lee, lead environmental designer for the game, commended Ortiz and the entire Black Panther development team.

In a brief stint at that place, I had the privilege of collaborating with individuals such as Karla, whose work not only motivated me but significantly influenced our collective endeavors. Moreover, her presence instilled confidence and fostered growth in my own artistic skills. To put it simply, Lee considers this team to be exceptional, perhaps even the best of all time.

Originally, there was a different game called Black Panther, which has been postponed, distinct from Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a future project by Skydance New Media that pairs Captain America with the World War II version of Black Panther, Azzuri – the ancestor of T’Challa, the contemporary Black Panther. Skydance has delayed the launch of Marvel 1943 to the early part of 2026.

Apart from Black Panther, another high-profile superhero game, the Wonder Woman project by Monolith Productions under Warner Bros. Games, has also been scrapped recently. This upcoming title, which aimed to incorporate the Nemesis system from their Lord of the Rings games, was not spared. In fact, the studio itself was closed down.

Currently, EA is continuing to develop its Iron Man game under its collaboration with Marvel. However, recent occurrences remind us that not even the most renowned superheroes from Marvel and DC are exempt from sudden cancellations.
