Black Ops 6 dev explains why MW3 campaign backlash hasn’t affected them

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the evolution of Call of Duty campaigns since the early days, I must admit that Modern Warfare 3’s campaign left me a bit underwhelmed. However, the reassuring words from Jon Zuk, Associate Creative Director at Raven Software, have ignited a spark of hope in my heart for Black Ops 6.

Despite receiving criticism upon its release in 2023, the campaign of Modern Warfare 3 didn’t affect the quality of Black Ops 6’s single-player mode, as confirmed by a developer at Raven Software.

It’s common knowledge that the campaign of Modern Warfare 3 didn’t get the warmest welcome from players. They expressed dissatisfaction because it felt brief and shallow, while our review labeled it as uninspiring.

In contrast to past releases, the single-player part of Black Ops 6 won’t be launched prematurely as before. However, despite the negative feedback, the developers have stated that they haven’t made any changes in response to it.

During an interview with IGN, Jon Zuk, a key creative figure at Raven Software, shared that they had established the overall narrative concept for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 well before its release.

Regarding our current game development process, it’s quite dynamic as we adapt to numerous factors. However, concerning the response to the previous game, we had essentially finalized the narrative and mission design we wanted to share, so we didn’t make any adjustments based on its reception.

Black Ops 6 dev explains why MW3 campaign backlash hasn’t affected them

Although Sledgehammer Games asserted they had ample time to construct MW3’s campaign, contradictory evidence points towards them only having about a year and a half to create the follow-up to MW2. On the other hand, Treyarch and its collaborating studios have been developing Black Ops 6 since 2020, following the release of BOCW.

Zuk has assured the community that the extra time granted has enabled them to experiment with various concepts, try out multiple options, and discard those that were unsuccessful, thereby boosting their confidence in the process.

He explained to IGN that when you have a tighter deadline, there are times when you end up keeping certain elements due to time constraints, even if they’re not entirely satisfactory. However, he emphasized that this gave us ample chances to refine and rework the missions until we were content with the final results.

In simple terms, Black Ops 6 is positioned during the 1990s, following the narrative of characters like Woods, Adler, and their team, in the timeframe post the occurrences of BOCW (Black Ops Cold War) and BO2 (Black Ops II). It’s suggested that this campaign will be roughly equivalent to a traditional Call of Duty campaign in length but is expected to surpass Treyarch’s previous campaigns.
