‘Bionico’s Bachata’ SXSW Audience Award-Winning Duo Heads to Locarno’s Match Me! With Next Project, ‘The Baker’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie lover with a deep appreciation for films that explore complex human stories set against unique cultural backdrops, I’m thrilled to see Dominican producer Cristian Mojica and filmmaker Yoel Morales making waves at this year’s Locarno Film Festival. Their latest production, “Bionico’s Bachata,” which won the SXSW Audience Award, will be screened in the Open Doors section, while their upcoming project, “The Baker,” will participate in the Match Me! forum.

At the 2023 Locarno Film Festival, Cristian Mojica from the Dominican Republic, both a producer and filmmaker, will have a busy schedule. Their award-winning film “Bionico’s Bachata,” which won the SXSW Audience Award, will be shown in the Open Doors section. Additionally, their upcoming project titled “The Baker” has been accepted into the Match Me! forum.

Mojica and Morales create films under the production label Mentes Fritas. They are working on a new project that’s still in development, and they intend to begin filming it towards the end of 2025.

In the 1925-era film, Marco is the protagonist who journeys from the Dominican Republic to Italy to claim his uncle’s inherited bakery. Unforeseen internal struggles and long-standing feuds with neighboring businesses add complexity to Marco’s rise. The situation intensifies when he encounters violence and forms unexpected partnerships, all while trying to restore the bakery’s esteemed heritage.

Morales describes “The Baker” as an raw Dominican film where its protagonist, a baker, must confront the terror of the city to expand his business. This tale is akin to blending “Mean Streets,” infusing Rohrwacher’s poetic elegance, and seasoning it with urban Dominican Dembow music.

In the movie’s context, Mojica expresses a strong preference for collaborating with Italian production companies but remains open to teaming up with producers from other European nations.

As a movie buff, I’ve always harbored a dream of shooting a film in Italy. The allure of Italian neorealism and the personal connection to my family’s migration have long inspired me. Now, with “Il Panettiere” (The Baker), I see an organic chance for a co-production between our two countries, both rich in people with shared experiences.

Morales and Mojica’s newest film, “Bionico’s Bachata,” which won the SXSW Audience Award, will be shown twice at this year’s Locarno Film Festival. This screening is part of the Open Doors: Focus on Latin America and the Caribbean sidebar. In this movie, Bionico, a hopeless romantic with a crack addiction, and his partner in crime Calvita, embark on a quest to secure employment, housing, and a wedding ring to marry La Flaca, their fiancée.

Before he can perform those actions, it’s essential that he first quits using drugs and remains sober. This requirement is in place because his fiancée is still undergoing treatment for her addiction at the rehab facility.
