Last year, Netflix released a documentary, The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, telling the story of Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer. Steen found friendship and a sense of belonging in World of Warcraft while battling a rare muscle-weakening disease. Now, his inspiring life story is becoming a scripted movie, and several well-known actors are already confirmed to star.
Deadline reports that Charlie Plummer, Anthony Hopkins, Toni Collette, Stephen Graham, Isabela Merced, and Maisy Stella will star in the upcoming film, Ibelin. Morten Tyldum, known for directing ‘The Imitation Game,’ will direct the movie, based on a screenplay by Ilaria Bernardini and Hossein Amini. The film is inspired by the blog ‘Musings of Life,’ written by Steen, who sadly passed away at the age of 25 in 2014.
Even as Steen’s physical health declined, he found community and purpose in the game World of Warcraft, playing as the character Ibelin. He formed strong friendships there that gave him the strength to keep living. Many people knew and respected him – the report highlighted how he was admired by thousands for his positive attitude, warmth, and bravery.
Vendôme Pictures and Pathé, a French studio, are collaborating on a new film called Ibelin. While they haven’t yet secured a U.S. distributor, they’re expected to sell the distribution rights at the American Film Market.
World of Warcraft players recently found out that Blizzard honored the late actor Steen by including his character, Lord Ibelin, in the game. The beta for the next World of Warcraft expansion, titled Midnight, begins on November 11th.
