Actors Billy Magnussen (“Road House,” “Lilo & Stitch”), Ella Purnell (“Fallout,” “Yellowjackets”), and Ariana Greenblatt (“Barbie,” “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t”) have been cast for the upcoming teen comedy titled “Hot Ted.” This film, which will mark Hannah Levy’s directorial debut, is a serial killer-themed comedy. Levy is known for her work as an alumnus of SNL.
Under the leadership of CEO Dave Bishop, Protagonist Pictures will debut global sales during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival marketplace.
In this story, ‘Warm-Hearted Ted’ crosses paths with podcast aficionado Zoe (Greenblatt), who is reluctantly sent to Shady Pines Camp for the summer by her guardians. One morning, camp counselor Liz fails to show up for breakfast. Counselor Amy informs everyone that Liz had to leave due to a ‘family emergency.’ However, Liz doubts this story and suspects her colleague Ted (Magnussen) is involved in her disappearance. The plot unfolds with the question: Is Hot Ted, who fits the profile of a serial killer with his absence on social media and possession of a van, actually a cold-blooded murderer or simply an irresistible charmer? It’s left to Zoe and her companions to uncover the truth.
Ted the Hot One” has been jointly created by Magnussen, Shane Andries, Anne Hollister (for HappyBad Bungalow’s project “Coup!”), and Javier Chapa and Phillip Braun (for Mucho Mas Media’s shows “Rosario” and “The Long Game”). Purnell is taking on her second serial killer starring/producing role following the Sky/Starz series “Sweetpea.” Morgan Cano-Long and Robert Muñoz will serve as executive producers for Mucho Mas. The script has been written by Grace McLeod, with Bishop, James Pugh, and George Hamilton serving as executive producers.
Director Levy describes “‘Hot Ted’ as a psychosexual thriller, envisioned by those yet to experience love, combining elements of ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘American Psycho.’ He expresses that this is the film he has long yearned to create – a modern take on the camp comedy, resonating with today’s teenage experiences and those from generations past.
Magnussen noted that HappyBad Bungalow focuses on boosting unique and motivating artists. He’s thrilled about supporting the sharp perspectives of Grace McLeod and Hannah Levy in this innovative endeavor!
An accomplished director of “Saturday Night Live,” Levy kicked off their career at The Onion and Funny or Die, a studio co-founded by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. They have also directed episodes for the Emmy-winning series “John Mulaney Presents: Everyone in LA” and written scripts for Comedy Central’s popular show “Alternatino,” as well as Netflix’s “Murderville.” During their tenure at SNL, they oversaw iconic digital shorts, directing celebrities such as Billie Eilish, Daniel Craig, and Kim Kardashian in viral sketches that became internet sensations.
McLeod is a witty playwright and screenwriter based in New York City who delves into social issues using an unconventional sense of humor. Their queer coming-of-age play “Herland” received a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere in 2019, with performances in Chicago, San Diego, and Los Angeles. As a playwright, McLeod has collaborated with The Playwrights Realm, No Guarantees Productions, Goodman Theatre, Ashland New Plays Festival, IAMA Theatre Company, and numerous others.
Bishop noted, ‘There’s nothing fresher than this – it’s sharp, funny, and offers a uniquely creative take on the genre.’ The film ‘Hot Ted’ brilliantly captures that awkward, chaotic transition from childhood to adulthood. With an exceptional cast headed by Billy, Ariana, and Ella, this movie seems destined to become an immediate classic.
