The jury, made up of Tammy Glover from Sony Pictures Television, Caroline Greville-Morris (UK production designer), Benjamin Hendriks (Dutch supervising location manager) and EJ Richards (UK supervising location manager), praised Frøya for its stunning scenery highlighted in the series and for its efforts to lure film productions.

Solveig Sigmond Ræstad, film commissioner at Midgard Film Commission Norway, expressed great joy upon receiving the award, stating, ‘It’s truly astounding that Frøya has been chosen as the most alluring film location in Europe! We faced tough competition and stringent criteria, so this recognition is deeply touching.’

The Netflix series “Billionaire Island,” produced by Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin of “Lilyhammer” fame, is based on the imaginary island of Brima. However, it was actually filmed for five weeks on Frøya island along the Trøndelag coast in central Norway from August to September 2023. The show premiered on Netflix in September 2024.

In a surprising turn of events, given that Norway boasts one of the longest coastlines globally, it’s rare to come across films or TV series set in this stunning environment. However, when we were scouting locations for “Billionaire Island,” we discovered Frøya offered everything we needed for our production. The breathtaking and rough terrain, the weather conditions, the blend of natural beauty and industrial sites, and the incredibly welcoming and supportive islanders who assisted us throughout the filming process, as stated by producer Gudny Hummelvoll.

Additionally, among the five finalists for the EUFCN Location Awards 2024, Austria’s historic Schönbrunn Palace and the Vienna Film Commission were chosen as winners of the EUFCN Audience Location Award 2024 for the HBO series “The Regime” starring Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts. This Austrian location was selected through a public online voting process.

For the eighth consecutive year, the EUFCN Location Awards were bestowed at the European Film Market held in Berlin.
