Bill Skarsgard Ate Steak Tartare, Raw Eggs and No Sugar to Train for ‘The Crow’: ‘He’s a Machine of Destruction’

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for delving into the intricacies of movie-making, I must say that Bill Skarsgard‘s dedication to his craft in “The Crow” is nothing short of commendable. His transformation from a mute fighter in “Boy Kills World” to the supernatural antihero The Crow is a testament to his unwavering commitment and discipline.

As a cinephile, I must confess that Bill Skarsgård’s physical transformation for his leading role in “The Crow” left me utterly astounded! In an exclusive reveal, we’ve got a glimpse into the grueling diet and workout regimen he followed to bring this iconic character to life.

Prior to filming “The Crow,” he had just completed starring in the indie action movie “Boy Kills World.” In this film, he portrayed a tough, silent fighter who displayed moves reminiscent of John Wick. To prepare for his role and maintain his physique, he followed a high-protein, restrictive diet and workout regimen. This routine helped him build muscle for both roles.

“Rupert Sanders, director of ‘The Crow’, revealed during the New York premiere on Tuesday that he often took Bill out for dinner. He’d always make the food choices for him as he knew his dietary preferences. It’s mainly steak tartare and raw eggs, a testament to his disciplined gym routine. He maintained a very healthy diet, making us feel guilty when we indulged in burgers and hot dogs late at night during our work in the Czech summer,” (paraphrased)

Alexander Skarsgård portrays Eric Draven, who turns into the supernatural antihero known as The Crow, in Lionsgate’s remake of the iconic 1994 film that originally starred the late Brandon Lee. Following their brutal murder, Eric is resurrected by a mystical crow spirit to exact revenge. Towards the end of the movie, when Skarsgård assumes the role of The Crow, his impressive muscular physique is revealed for the first time.

“Skarsgard mentioned that he had been preparing for quite some time. Along with his trainer, they gradually increased the weight he was lifting but didn’t want to become overly muscular. It was challenging because they wanted The Crow to be well-built, yet Eric shouldn’t be. He felt Eric shouldn’t be thin, but it wasn’t feasible to spread the training period over six months as in ‘Raging Bull.’ So, they focused on weight training and consumed a lot of protein instead.”

One thrilling moment finds Skarsgard’s character, the Crow, secretly enter an opera house and brutally eliminate numerous adversaries, all in pursuit of the individual responsible for his demise. Sanders described this action-packed event as “the wildest day on set.”

Bill performed an impressive amount of demanding stunts personally, as he often appears very active in the film. His physicality on screen is astounding, and his body in the movie is simply remarkable. When he’s in action, he transforms into a force of destruction, yet he also delivers tender and compassionate moments that deepen the emotional impact of the action sequences. That’s why I believe audiences are connecting with them so strongly. They’re not merely violent scenes but rather moments where you feel you’re experiencing the character’s emotions alongside him.

Once filming was over, Skarsgard celebrated the end of his diet with a beer.

“He stated that he found his meal incredibly enjoyable, leaving him with no desire to stray from his diet. He doesn’t have a strong sweet tooth, but occasionally indulges in an alcoholic beer as a celebratory drink following a shoot.”

Simultaneously, Twigs (who portrays Eric’s love interest Shelly) followed a workout regimen significantly distinct from Eric’s intense training regime that fueled his bloodthirsty vengeance pursuit.

“Instead of performing any stunts, she chose to explore and immerse herself in the nightlife and subcultures of Prague for her physical training. This meant dancing at raves in Prague, which was quite different from what Bill did.”
