Bill Murray shared that he became unexpectedly tearful during the “SNL50” show a month ago, shedding tears multiple times during the anniversary celebration.
On SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning” (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), the renowned comedian confided in host Sway Calloway that he found himself tearing up when off camera. He described the experience as surprisingly emotional, admitting he shed tears three times during the show, revealing its deep impact on him.
Murray admitted to shedding tears as he watched the video and historical clips, confessing, “It’s clear there’s a lot of content I wasn’t expecting.” The scene featuring the late comedian Gilda Radner alongside her friend Steve Martin had a profound impact on him.
Gilda [Radner] was the one dancing on stage with Steve Martin, and I distinctly recall watching them practice their dance routine for countless days. Gilda was someone I admired deeply, and her presence left an indelible impact on me. As I sat in a dressing room surrounded by others, my emotions overtook me and I couldn’t help but break down.
He too spoke fondly of another deceased “SNL” colleague, John Belushi. “There’s the movie Tom Schiller created where Belushi toured the ‘Saturday Night Live’ cemetery and saw all his co-workers who had passed away. While everyone else was following, it was John who went first,” Murray stated. “Just thinking about that moment, I feel like I could leave now. John was a person who paved the way for many careers. He brought us all out from Chicago.”
He also reflected on another late “SNL” cast member, John Belushi. “There’s the film Tom Schiller directed that had Belushi visiting the ‘Saturday Night Live’ graveyard and seeing all his fellow performers who had passed away. Meanwhile, it was John who passed first,” Murray said. “Merely contemplating that and remembering him… I feel like I could depart now. John was a person who opened up numerous career opportunities. He led us all out from Chicago.
Murray, who was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” from 1977 to 1980, showed up multiple times during the anniversary special. This included an appearance on a special edition of “Weekend Update” as well as reprising his popular character Nick the Lounge Singer. He’s recently been busy giving interviews following the release of his new movie “Riff Raff,” in which he stars alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, Pete Davidson, and others.
