Bill Murray Says Bruce Willis Refilled M&Ms in His ‘SNL’ Dressing Room as an NBC Page; They Were ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Co-Stars Decades Later: ‘Bruce Is a Good F—ing Guy’

Bill Murray and his “The Friend” co-star, Naomi Watts, talked about their memories of Bruce Willis on a recent episode of “Watch What Happens Live.” They had bonded during the filming of Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom.” Interestingly, they had previously crossed paths decades ago when Murray was part of the “SNL” cast in the late 1970s and Willis was an aspiring actor working as a page at NBC.

Bill Murray praised ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, calling it beautiful and delightful. He enjoyed collaborating with Bruce Willis, who recently celebrated his birthday. Murray considers Willis as not just a great actor, but an exceptional individual and a true friend.

During my time on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ he worked as an assistant at NBC. His role involved restocking snacks like M&Ms and pretzels in the actors’ dressing rooms. Later, when he had become successful, he told me that you and Gilda were kind to him. I have always felt we got along well with this individual.

In the year 2012, Murray and Willis made their long-awaited onscreen collaboration in Wes Anderson’s movie “Moonrise Kingdom.” This coming-of-age dramedy revolved around two unconventional teenagers who dared to escape their parents and set off on a coastal island in New England. The film was a commercial success, grossing approximately $68 million globally, and it received an Academy Award nomination for the best original screenplay.

2022 saw Willis retiring from acting following a diagnosis of aphasia, a communication disorder resulting from brain damage. A year later, his family disclosed that his condition had evolved into frontotemporal dementia. At the time, they expressed relief for having a definitive diagnosis, despite the pain it brought.
