Bill Hader to Co-Write, Potentially Star in Jonestown Series in Development at HBO (EXCLUSIVE)

It turns out Bill Hader has been drinking the Kool-Aid.

It’s been reported solely by EbMaster that Hader and Daniel Zelman are working on an HBO series focusing on Jim Jones and the disturbing incidents at the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, also known as Jonestown.

Based on what I’ve heard from someone familiar with the situation, it appears that Hader might take on a role in the series too. Not only is he collaborating with Zelman on the script, but they are both responsible for overseeing the show as co-showrunners and executive producers. If the project gets the green light, Hader might even step into the director’s chair.

The news about the upcoming series isn’t far off following a Jonestown film being featured as a main theme in an episode of the highly-praised Apple TV+ show, “The Studio.” However, neither Martin Scorsese nor Steve Buscemi are linked to the HBO production at this stage.

In the 1950s, Jones established the People’s Temple. Later, in the 1970s, he created what would be known as Jonestown, a settlement in Guyana, an African country. Unfortunately, Jonestown gained worldwide notoriety when more than 900 members of the People’s Temple, including Jones himself, died in a mass tragedy involving murder-suicide at his command in 1978.

Ever since then, Jones and the infamous Jonestown have remained under constant media scrutiny. Countless books and documentaries have been published about them, while Powers Boothe portrayed Jones in the two-part CBS miniseries titled “Guyana Tragedy: The Jim Jones Story” in 1980. Additionally, creator of “Breaking Bad,” Vince Gilligan, was working on a Jonestown series for HBO starting from 2016; however, that project failed to materialize.

Previously, Bill Hader was jointly responsible for creating and acting in the TV series “Barry” on HBO, which concluded after four seasons in 2023. The show garnered a total of 16 Emmy nominations, with four being for best comedy series. In 2018 and 2019, Hader personally won two Emmys for his exceptional performance as the leading actor in a comedy. Apart from “Barry”, Hader is renowned for his stint on “Saturday Night Live,” his roles in shows like “South Park,” and films such as “IT: Chapter Two,” “The Skeleton Twins,” “Inside Out,” and “Trainwreck.

He is repped by UTA and Felker Toczek.

Previously, Zelman teamed up with Glenn and Todd A. Kessler to develop the successful FX show “Damages.” Spanning five seasons, it received 20 Emmy nominations and took home four awards. Subsequently, they worked together on the Netflix series “Bloodline,” which aired for three seasons and clinched Ben Mendelsohn an Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama in 2016. Additionally, Zelman held an executive producer position for the HBO prequel pilot of “Game of Thrones” titled “The Long Night.” Furthermore, Zelman provided consulting production services for “Succession.

He is repped by Goodman Genow.
