Missy (Jenny Slate) ponders her personal journey from a shy child to a fervent adult, complete with entering a relationship with Nate (Nathan Fillion), who bears a striking resemblance to her childhood crush Nathan Fillion. Her parents come to terms with her maturing, leaving Missy bewildered. Jessi grapples with the demands of her mother’s expectations for the season and struggles to conceal her marijuana use. As the summer internship she’s applying for looms, she becomes overwhelmed. Yet, in time, she recognizes that the hardships she experienced in previous seasons are now worthy of laughter.

Following their mutual decision to co-parent Ludacris, it appears that the bond between Jay and Lola in Big Mouth has found its footing. Yet, despite this stability, Lola (Kroll) continues to find it difficult to confess her feelings for Jay (Jason Mantzoukas). Matthew (Andrew Rannells), on the other hand, is apprehensive about deepening his relationship with Dewayne, a boy he meets online. Although eager to explore sexual experiences, he feels shy about expressing this openly.

In an unexpectedly positive turn of events, the love triangle involving Lola, Jay, and Matthew resolves itself quite nicely in the finale of Big Mouth Season 7. By the end of the episode, most of them initially hesitate to enter the light, with Steve expressing concerns about lacking companionship, but Nick assures him they will support each other.

However, as they draw near to the light, certain characters express their enthusiasm for what lies ahead. Matthew anticipates bantering with Dewayne, while Lola decides to part ways with Jay, opting for independence. Each character fades away gradually as they proceed, leaving only an outline behind before completely disappearing, moving towards their futures without a glance back.

Following eight lengthy seasons shared, it seems that the partnership between Maury and Andrew will also conclude. Contrary to earlier assumptions in “Big Mouth” that one’s hormone monster departs after losing virginity, “The Great Unknown” challenges this notion. Initially struggling with the idea of parting ways with his cherished client, Maury spends the episode in close company with Andrew. When Rick announces his retirement, viewers are taken aback to discover that Nick learns Maury will be taking on the role as Andrew’s hormone monster – an unexpected twist that few could have foreseen.

Big Mouth Season 8 Doesn’t Utilize Human Resources’ Cast Enough

In the show Big Mouth, characters from Human Resources often make appearances, but they take a backseat during the finale. Interestingly, Montel, who was a significant character in Season 6 and played by Cole Escola, is absent from Season 8 entirely. It’s surprising that Montel doesn’t reappear in Big Mouth’s final season, especially considering that neither his parents are ever referred to by name even once throughout the season.

As a cinephile, I found myself longing for more screen time from some beloved characters in season 8 of Human Resources. Characters like Lovebug Rochelle (Keke Palmer), Depression Kitties Kitty Bouchet (Jean Smart) and Cat Stevens (James III), Tito the Anxiety Mosquito (Maria Bamford), The Shame Wizard (David Thewlis), and Ambition Gremlin Petra (Rosie Perez) made brief appearances, but their limited presence left me yearning for more interactions with the show’s alumni. However, at the very end, when they all gathered to watch the kids step into the light, it was a heartwarming moment that made the wait worthwhile.

In my humble opinion as a movie critic, the finale of “Big Mouth” seemed to overlook some significant characters. For instance, Caitlin (Jenny Slate), who was noticeably absent for much of the season, only made a brief cameo during the mother’s musical number. Similarly, Delilah, Jessi’s baby sister, and Elijah, Missy’s asexual love interest from Season 6, were conspicuously missing.

The absence was also felt with Nick’s new friend Andrew and his cat, Mr. Pink, voiced by the renowned Steve Buscemi. These characters were instrumental at the beginning of the season, yet they seemed to vanish without a trace as the storyline progressed. It leaves one wondering if these characters will reappear in future seasons or if their stories have been left untold.

It’s worth mentioning that Devon is absent from the final episode of Big Mouth. Although fans might have hoped otherwise considering the voice actor Jak Knight passed away in 2022, it was still a possibility. In subsequent seasons after Knight’s demise, Devon can be seen in the background, but the character wasn’t recast and thus remains silent during these episodes. Missy does express missing him when reminiscing about middle school in season 8, but Devon himself doesn’t appear at all.
