Warning! Spoilers for Big Mistakes season 1 ahead!
The first season of Netflix’s crime-comedy, Big Mistakes, ends with a surprising twist and leaves Nicky (Dan Levy) and Morgan (Taylor Ortega) facing a new mystery. The series, from the creators of Schitt’s Creek, begins with the siblings trying to fulfill their mother Linda’s (Laurie Metcalf) wish to buy a necklace for their dying grandmother. What starts as a simple errand quickly spirals into something much bigger when a theft and kidnapping reveal the necklace—later buried with their grandmother—is far more valuable than they initially thought, leading to them being forced to work for criminals.
Things quickly become more complicated for Nicky and Morgan. They’re working tirelessly on secret assignments, but have no idea what their bosses are really trying to achieve. The situation escalates dramatically when they purchase bulls with cocaine-filled testicles, revealing they’ve stumbled into a massive criminal enterprise. After a botched betrayal and a violent hotel incident, Nicky and Morgan discover the truth: their employers are connected to the Italian mafia.
The most surprising moment of Big Mistakes season 1 happens at the end of the last episode. While Nicky and Morgan are celebrating Linda’s election as mayor at Annette’s (Elizabeth Perkins) house, Annette leads Morgan upstairs. She gives Morgan the necklace that caused all the trouble and then reveals she’s the one pulling the strings—the boss behind everything in Big Mistakes. This means Nicky and Morgan are unknowingly working for Annette and her organization, as are the Italians.
How Annette Secretly Being A Mob Boss Retroactively Changes Everything In Big Mistakes
The reveal that Annette is the true leader of the Italian mob dramatically changes how we view season 1 of Big Mistakes. Throughout the season, Annette seemed like a nice person – even when she was subtly working against Linda, she wasn’t openly mean. She also clearly loves her son, Max (Jack Innanen), but isn’t blind to his flaws. Knowing she’s the crime boss now makes it clear she was aware of all of Morgan and Nicky’s problems the entire time, which adds a fascinating new layer to the show.
The reason Morgan stole the diamond necklace remained a mystery for a while, but the finale of Big Mistakes reveals it was actually meant for Annette. She’s kept it hidden all this time and has been listening to reports from her associates about how far Nicky and Morgan went to retrieve it—even going so far as to dig up their grandmother’s grave. She never revealed any of this, and throughout the Netflix show, she acted towards them with a strange combination of warmth and indifference.
Annette’s confession reveals she was behind the attack on Ivan and the Brazilians. Yusuf had informed the Italians that they were being betrayed, leading Annette to order the hit. Nicky and Morgan were puzzled by their survival, but Annette was responsible for that too – she spared them, not out of concern for them, but as a calculated move. She also chose to spare Max’s fiancée solely for Max’s sake.
What Annette’s True Identity Means For Morgan’s Relationship With Max
Watching Big Mistakes, it quickly became obvious to me that Max is just… awful. He’s so good at making Morgan think she’s the one with issues, and tragically, she actually starts to believe him! He’s spoiled, mean, acts like he deserves everything, constantly complains, and to top it all off, he’s unfaithful. I was so relieved to see Morgan finally seem ready to leave him at the end of the first season, but then that huge reveal about Annette completely threw everything into chaos.
The powerful crime boss reveals she understands Morgan no longer loves Max. However, because Max is still devoted to her, Annette insists the engagement will continue. She doesn’t explicitly threaten consequences if Morgan ends things, but it’s clear the fallout could be severe, ranging from ruined reputations to something far worse – potentially even death.
Nicky and Morgan are now completely stuck. Not only are they working for the mafia, but they’re going to be forced to officially join the family of the mob boss. Morgan has the difficult task of staying with Max and keeping him content, because their safety – and possibly their mother’s – depends on it.
Annette Funding Linda’s Mayor Campaign Means More Trouble To Come
A key storyline in ‘Big Mistakes’ centers on Linda’s campaign and the changing allegiances of Annette. Initially, Annette supported Linda’s opponent, but later switched her support to Linda. However, even with Annette’s financial backing, Linda didn’t win easily. She ended up in a tie with her opponent – a deeply unlikeable and prejudiced candidate – meaning the election would be decided by a random game of Rock-Paper-Scissors.
Despite all of Linda’s hard work preparing for the game, it didn’t matter when her opponent unexpectedly withdrew, and Linda became mayor instead. Looking back, it’s clear Annette was behind this surprising turn of events. This gives Annette leverage over Linda, as well as Morgan and Nicky. As season 2 of Big Mistakes begins, Annette is more powerful than ever, and that spells trouble for everyone.
What’s Next For Nicky & Morgan In Big Mistakes Season 2
Nicky and Morgan already faced a lot of challenges in the first season of Big Mistakes, and things are likely to get even harder if the show gets renewed. They initially hoped to leave their lives of crime behind, but now they’re completely under Annette’s control, effectively becoming full-fledged members of the Italian mafia. And escaping that situation won’t be easy – or likely to end well.
In season 2 of Big Mistakes, Nicky had to end things with his boyfriend, Tareq (Jacob Gutierrez), because Tareq knew too much information. Nicky told the Italians he hadn’t shared the details of what happened in Florida with Tareq, but this wasn’t entirely honest. This breakup is particularly painful because Nicky sacrificed his position within his religious community in season 1 to be able to openly pursue a relationship. Now, at the start of season 2, he’s a former reverend who is unemployed, heartbroken, and working for a dangerous criminal.
Morgan might actually do well in season 2 of Big Mistakes. While her relationship with Max will probably continue to be difficult, as she feels trapped, she realized in season 1 that she secretly likes the excitement of a criminal lifestyle. If she embraces it, Morgan could even become Annette’s apprentice. Only time will tell if that happens.
