Big declaration from Rockstar Games owners: Consoles aren’t going away, but PC is the future

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box to discuss the future of the video game industry.

  1. Zelnick mentioned that consoles aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but the gaming industry is definitely shifting more towards PCs.
  2. This is part of a general trend moving towards open systems at the expense of closed ones. According to Zelnick, traditional consoles, which belong to the latter category, may disappear in the future, but the type of devices we connect to the TV mainly for gaming isn’t going anywhere.

Strauss Zelnick’s statements align with the growing shift of gaming from traditional consoles to PCs. We’re seeing PCs increasingly compete in areas where consoles used to be the primary platform.

Valve is innovating with the Steam Deck, and recently revealed a new Steam Machine that functions similarly to a traditional home console. Meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate that Microsoft is exploring a way to combine the power of a PC with the simplicity of a console for the Xbox.

Zelnick also noted that console and mobile gaming are currently on a similar level, but mobile gaming is expanding at a significantly quicker rate.

It’s a bit ironic that Strauss Zelnick is suggesting PCs are the future of gaming, considering the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. While GTA VI is almost guaranteed to be the biggest game launch in history, it will initially only be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Unless there’s a surprise, PC gamers will likely have to wait a considerable amount of time before they can play it.

The CEO likely referred to the whole gaming industry, not just his own company. Last quarter, Take-Two Interactive earned 46% of its revenue from mobile games, 41% from console games, and the remaining 13% from PC and other platforms.
