Big Bang Theory Star Reveals Why Her Character Disappeared From The Show

Back in 2007, I was captivated by the debut of a series, and one character that stood out for me was Dr. Leslie Winkle, played by Sara Gilbert. However, as the seasons unfolded, the screen time for this intriguing character seemed to diminish without much clarity or explanation. It left me and many other viewers wondering about her fate within the storyline.

“When I was on a talk show recently, I shared my thoughts about Leslie’s absence from the sitcom. I believe the writers may have run out of ideas for her character because she tends to leave situations swiftly, and once she’s gone, it becomes challenging to keep the story going. She’s a unique character, and when she departs, there’s not much narrative left. However, it was fun working on the show, and I always enjoy getting back to work.”

The character portrayed by Gilbert, who was a physicist alongside Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, and Raj in the same lab, expressed her willingness to participate in the upcoming spinoff series titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” if given the chance. “Absolutely, I would be open to it,” the actor replied promptly. “In retrospect, I would have been eager to do more at the time.

In the book “The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series,” published in 2022, executive producer Steve Molaro explained why Leslie had a brief run on the show. According to him, they were looking for love interests for Leonard and wanted to incorporate more female scientists since Leslie was also affiliated with the university. Additionally, there was a connection as series creator Lorre had previously worked with Sara (from “Roseanne”) where Gilbert and Galecki played romantic roles.

Leslie Winkle Was Never Meant To Be A Permanent Character

In Molaro’s words, it was never about finding a lifelong partner for Leonard. Instead, we were introducing characters and observing which ones led to entertaining stories. Leslie, who appeared in Seasons 1, 2, 3, and 9, was one of those characters. Her last appearance was as a cameo in the show’s 200th episode, titled “The Celebration Experimentation.

At this point, it’s uncertain whether Gilbert will feature in the upcoming spinoff of The Big Bang Theory, titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. According to Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey, they have reviewed some scripts and had creative discussions with Max, which gives them hope for positive updates soon. She also mentioned that the scripts are “creative,” “imaginative,” and most importantly, “extremely humorous.

Stuart’s Failed Attempt to Save the Cosmos highlights Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), Denise (Lauren Lapkus), and Bert Kibbler (Brian Posehn). All four characters were recurring figures in The Big Bang Theory, with Bowie recently revealing a behind-the-scenes photo taken during the show’s early table reads. Unlike The Big Bang Theory, the new series will not feature any of its original main cast members.

You can watch all twelve seasons of “The Big Bang Theory” on Max, but unfortunately, there’s no announced release date yet for the movie titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
