Over the course of a hundred years, the main narrative in “Resurrection” unfolds across six distinct segments, set in a world where humans have forgotten how to dream. “Resurrection” is a film divided into six sections spread over 100 years. It takes place in a world where people can no longer dream, except for one creature who holds on to the dying fragments of the dreamworld. Starring in it are Jackson Yee, a popular Chinese singer and actor, and Shu Qi, a veteran actress who often works with Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
EbMaster critic Jessica Kiang lauded “Resurrection” as a “wonderfully extravagant film, packed with grand aspirations that encompass five to six distinct movies. Each segment is both whimsical and quirky, yet they all contribute to a profoundly sad tribute to the dream of 20th-century cinema and the lives we once knew within it.
In an interview prior to the Cannes premiere, filmmaker Bi expressed: “Screens now seem to be shrinking, and I aim to recreate the nostalgic sensation of theater viewing. The narrative kicks off in the early 20th century, and I utilized the cinematic style typical of that time period.
The agreement for “Resurrection” was reached between Janus Films and Les Films du Losange. This film was jointly produced by China’s Huace Pictures and Dangmai Films, along with France’s CG Cinema, and it includes music by M83.
Bi Gan’s ‘Resurrection’ is an adventurous, time-traveling, genre-blending journey in cinema and dreams that will delight fans of bold, innovative filmmakers such as David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, Leos Carax, and Wong Kar-wai. We are incredibly proud and enthusiastic to share this mind-bending, thought-provoking, grand cinematic adventure on screens throughout North America, and to support the work of Bi Gan, a director whom we have long admired.
