As a passionate film enthusiast who has had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of Asian cinema, I am thoroughly impressed and captivated by Dechen Roder’s masterpiece, “I, The Song.” Hailing from Bhutan, a country that is not traditionally known for its cinematic contributions, Roder has managed to craft a narrative that resonates universally, addressing pressing issues such as women’s rights, identity crises, and the challenges of globalization in the digital age.
The movie “I, The Song” directed by the Bhutanese filmmaker Dechen Roder has been purchased by Fidalgo Film Distribution to be distributed in Norway.
The movie debuted at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it was acquired, and will also have its Asian premiere at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa. In the movie, a school teacher embarks on a journey to the southern part of Bhutan to find her doppelganger in order to preserve her job and reputation. However, as she gets involved in the life of her lookalike, she finds herself uniquely positioned to unravel the mystery behind her doppelganger’s disappearance and recover a sacred song that was stolen.
This production stars Tandin Bidha, Jimmie Wangyal Tshering, Tshering Dorji, Sonam Lhamo, and Dorji Wangdi. It is being produced by Roder with Dakinny Productions (Bhutan) and Johann Chapelan with Girelle Production (France).
This production is a collaboration between Fernanda Renno, Fidalgo Films from Norway, Stefano Centini and Volos Films from Taiwan and Italy, Paolo Maria Spina and Revolver from Italy, Mikaël Barre and Actarus Productions from France, Michaël Gauthier & Mathilde Solimeo and Follow Back Films from France, as well as Nyema Zam from Samuh in Bhutan.
Roder mentioned that whether it’s due to being Bhutanese or growing up surrounded by tales of intuition, feelings, magic, and surrealism, these elements seem to influence his filmmaking as well. He believes they provide him with strength and infuse the films themselves with positive signs and energies.
Making the movie was challenging since securing financing proved to be tough and time-consuming. Many friends and family who read the script recommended including more mountain and landscape scenes, stating that’s what audiences now want from Bhutanese films. However, the film “I, the Song” is primarily shot in southern Bhutan, below the mountains, in a more urban area, which goes against the typical image of Bhutan. Despite this, Roder was adamant about not sacrificing the story and themes of the film for this reason. Instead, he wanted to portray Bhutan as he experiences it personally, with a unique “beauty.” Consequently, he chose not to alter the script and remained optimistic about finding support.
Chapelan expressed: “I’m incredibly honored to share this tale because it tackles significant matters that resonate across Asia (and globally), such as consent, harmful and aggressive masculinity, and abusive and controlling behaviors in workplaces. It’s crucial for us, especially Asian and non-Western creators, to contribute to the growing awareness following the #MeToo movement. More and more filmmakers in Asia are focusing on women’s rights, and we’re thrilled to be a part of this movement.
This film goes beyond women’s issues, exploring themes like identity, globalization, and the isolation felt in the digital age. It delves into subconscious matters such as the erosion of individuality, sanctity, distinctiveness, and the melding of cultures into mainstream modernity. In creating this film, I was heavily influenced by Pankaj Mishra’s thoughts on modern history, nationalism, and patriarchy in the “global south”. We are teetering on the brink of a new epoch marked by global strife, war, misogyny, and nationalism. I believe it is our duty to confront and initiate discussions about these pressing matters through thoughtful, insightful, and engaging films like ‘I, The Song’.
