Last week’s sudden release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has stirred up feelings of nostalgia for the original game in us all, even in the very team that developed Oblivion way back in 2006. In a recent video, Bethesda brought together the original creators of Oblivion to watch a retrospective on the game’s production, nearly two decades since its initial creation.
Todd Howard prepares for an embarrassing moment as he remarks beforehand, “This is going to be quite uncomfortable watching this.” As a video unfolds, it’s primarily heartwarming, with long-time Bethesda team members sharing nostalgic memories of when the company was still small – only about 40 employees at the time, compared to the current workforce of around 450.
As I reflect on those moments, I can’t help but recall the hurdles we leapfrogged in our journey to success. One team member put it, “The old clips remind me of the challenges we faced.” Others echoed this sentiment, sharing stories about how daringly ambitious our project was for its era. In hindsight, I realize now that we were pushing boundaries, tackling tasks that seemed almost impossible back then.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reflect on how Oblivion served as a pivotal moment for Bethesda. One developer put it aptly, “Oblivion was like version 2.0 of our studio, marking the beginning of this talented team coming together to create something truly remarkable.”
Howard stated, “It was incredibly challenging to accomplish our goal.” However, Oblivion proved to be a triumph for the studio, both commercially and critically, earning numerous accolades and shaping the landscape of fantasy RPGs for years. The unexpected launch of Oblivion: Remastered has sparked the same enthusiasm among fans, with remaster nostalgia running high. Upon release, the remaster attracted over 100,000 simultaneous players on Steam, and the numbers have remained elevated in the following week.
