Bethesda flies out Skyblivion mod team to meet Oblivion Remastered devs

In an unexpected move reminiscent of a shocking appearance by a Daedric Prince, Bethesda unexpectedly sent off the Skyblivion team.

Skyblivion is an unofficial remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, crafted using the Skyrim game engine. This project has been in development since 2012, led by volunteers under TESRenewal. Instead of a simple makeover, Skyblivion is a comprehensive reimagining of Oblivion, offering more than just cosmetic changes.

If it seems like this might be competing with Elder Scrolls IV Remastered, you’re mistaken. Instead of sending a legal notice, Bethesda provided game keys and travel arrangements.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share the thrill when I learned that instead of closing the doors post-release of Oblivion Remastered in April, Bethesda graciously gifted the Skyblivion team access keys to the newly remastered game and even arranged flights for them to visit their headquarters. What an incredible show of support!

From cease and desist to first class flights

The original creators graciously welcomed the enthusiastic fan group for a face-to-face encounter with the main developers. Lead developer, Rebelzize, described the experience as “truly surreal.

We greatly appreciate Bethesda Studios for inviting us and giving us a tour! It was truly amazing to meet the legendary creators behind some of our beloved games. Their passion for Skyblivion and the modding community mirrored our own, making the experience all the more memorable. 🤝

Bethesda didn’t just make a superficial gesture with this; they genuinely supported the fan remake. They gave them a tour, discussed game development, and displayed genuine enthusiasm – a level of backing usually reserved for family members boosting each other’s small businesses like Etsy shops.

The two projects currently coexist, and truth be told, it’s like having a variety at a buffet. Oblivion Remastered maintains its original essence, featuring the same quests yet with a fresh coat of paint. It operates on Unreal Engine 5, but it still relies on the fundamental Gamebryo foundation.

In essence, Skyblivion undertakes a complete overhaul, featuring revamped settings, expanded lore, enhanced combats, and comprehensive support for Skyrim mods. Interestingly, it seems that operating two cakeshops can be profitable too!

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the unstoppable reign of The Elder Scrolls franchise. Just last week, Oblivion Remastered skyrocketed to become the third top-selling U.S. game of 2025! Can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next!

Under the guidance of Microsoft, Bethesda appears content to embrace its past as a modding powerhouse, all the while maintaining focus on the upcoming Elder Scrolls VI project.

With more than two thousand modifications available for the remastered version, it’s evident that mods continue to be the heart of this series. Bethesda understands this. Moreover, the Skyblivion project is still thriving, as demonstrated by its active development status, backed up by a valid ticket or pass.
