Beta Film, Grupo Globo Sign Multi-Year Production Partnership, Kicked Off With ‘Discipline’ From ‘Sintonia’ Team, Janeiro Studios

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems across the globe, I find myself utterly enthralled by the groundbreaking partnership between Beta Film and Grupo Globo. With roots deeply embedded in European cinema and an eye always on the horizon for emerging creative hubs, this alliance marks a bold step forward for both parties.

In an exciting development, powerhouses Beta Film from Europe and Grupo Globo, the leading production group in Latin America, have signed a long-term partnership. This partnership commences with the joint project, ‘Discipline,’ conceived by Konrad Dantas and Felipe Braga, the talented duo behind Netflix’s most popular Brazilian show, “Sintonia.

Beta Film’s initial series outside of Europe is labeled as ‘Discipline,’ yet Head Jan Mojto has long been attentive to emerging creative centers. He ventured into Central and Eastern Europe ahead of many rivals, a decision that is now proving fruitful.

Written, directed, and produced by Dantas (founder of KondZilla) and Braga, “Discipline” will be co-produced by KondZilla (awarded an International Emmy, a Latin Grammy, and three Cannes Lions), LB Entertainment (headed by Braga and known for productions like “Lov3” and “Samantha!”), Globo, Beta Film, and Janeiro Studios – a new production company led by Koby Gal Raday, former CCO of Beta.

Globo has exclusive rights in Brazil; Beta Film handles international sales.

In a symbolic move extending beyond Brazilian borders, the series titled “Discipline,” categorized as a “premium drama” by Beta Film during Mipcom, delves into an industry where women’s voices are scarcely heard, according to Beta.

The series follows Maicon, a young Brazilian entrepreneur, who finds himself caught between his female-dominated family and a European crime heiress navigating her own patriarchal challenges, Beta added.

In an important partnership spanning the Atlantic Ocean, these individuals find their journeys intersecting over a valuable resource – cocaine. However, when Maicon gets unexpectedly detained, the balance of this global partnership experiences a significant shift, and loyalty assumes greater importance.

As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “I’m captivated by ‘Discipline,’ a gripping tale that delves into the macho business realm. It follows the journey of a young man caught between his matriarchal family at home and a powerful female business associate overseas. The narrative unfolds in a world of 21st-century cocaine smuggling, offering a rich tapestry of personal struggles amidst cultural collisions.

The series points out a troubling trend: Investments in local youth often favor suppressing organized crime instead of promoting education and development. This lack of attention can drive promising young people towards the unregulated drug market, leading to an increase in violence and worsening social problems, especially among the youth.

Braga and Dantas are in charge of the team responsible for drafting the scripts for the upcoming eight-hour series. Joining this group is longtime collaborator of Braga, Duda de Almeida who has previously worked on “Sintonia” and “Lov3”, along with Davi Kolb from “Criminal Code” and “Verdict”, and Tamiris Hilário of “Criminal Code”. In simpler terms, the duo (Braga and Dantas) are heading a scriptwriting team, and they’re being assisted by three additional writers who have worked on various popular shows.

The show has been established on Globo’s streaming service, which is currently producing some of the finest television shows originating from South America. Notably, “The Others,” whose second season is now available for purchase, is one of their latest offerings, and it will be introduced to the market this week at Mipcom.

Introducing a new original series titled “Discipline,” this addition to Globoplay’s lineup aims to boost its appeal among younger audiences, as it currently boasts street credibility. With over 67.4 million subscribers, YouTube’s music channel, Canal Konzilla, holds the title of the world’s most popular urban music platform.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that our team’s hard work aligns perfectly with Globo’s strategic vision for their streaming platform, Globoplay. This project is a testament to our commitment to delivering top-notch content on the platform.

Collaborative productions offer a fresh approach to distributing Globo’s content globally. By teaming up with Beta Film, we’re pooling our skills in an arrangement that benefits everyone, particularly the audience. We’re actively seeking more collaborators for this project, and have already secured notable figures from the audiovisual industry like Kondzilla and LB Entertainment. We’re thrilled about this initial partnership and the upcoming series development,” said Manuel Belmar, Globo director of Digital Products.

Beta Film’s Executive Vice President, Christian Gockel, expressed enthusiasm about focusing on a region brimming with fresh, distinct narratives that seem endless. He emphasized that the partnership they are embarking on marks the start of a lasting collaboration, and they are confident in having suitable collaborators to carry forward Beta’s strategy while amplifying local voices on a global stage.

As an ardent advocate at Janeiro Studios, I wholeheartedly express that it’s past due for the world to embrace the exceptional talent and captivating narratives from Brazil. With our latest project, seamlessly blending Brazilian and European characters of steel, we’re one step closer to our vision. We take immense pride in collaborating with trailblazers like KondZilla and LB Entertainment, Globo and Beta, as we breathe new life into the crime genre with this groundbreaking story.
