Beta Film and Athens production company Foss Productions are joining forces to create a six-hour dramatic series titled “The Great Chimera.” This series will be the first on-screen adaptation of a significant 20th-century Greek novel, offering viewers an unprecedented look at this classic work.
After the successful partnership we had on the popular TV series “The Beach” and Yorgos Zois’ movie “Arcadia,” premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2024, I am thrilled to be a part of the production team for “The Great Chimera.” This project is being produced by Foss Productions in collaboration with Beta Film, who are managing international sales. Filming has commenced on the beautiful Greek island of Syros, and will later move to Athens and Trieste, Italy.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement for this series that’s been masterfully adapted from M. Karagatsis’ groundbreaking 1930s masterpiece. This timeless tale delves deep into the intricate psychological journey of a young Greek woman yearning for something beyond the conventional role society has set for her.
In this captivating production, I find myself drawn to Italy’s Fotinì Peluso, who breathes life into the character of Marina, a restless, young Italian beauty captivated by the allure of classical Greek culture. When her heart is captured by Greek shipowner Yannis, portrayed by Andreas Konstantinou, she makes an instant decision to embark on a new life with him on the picturesque island of Syros. This enticing story promises to take us on a journey filled with love, self-discovery, and the struggle against societal expectations.
Despite leaving her past in the dust, Marina continues to grapple with an internal turmoil that intensifies over time. Balancing between two cultures and societal pressures, she grapples with reconciling her passions and personal desires. Eventually, yielding to her affection for Minas, her husband’s brother portrayed by Dimitris Kitsos (known for “The Beach” and “Maestro in Blue”), Marina finds herself entangled in a tale as old as Greek mythology – a self-inflicted tragedy.
The Great Chimera”
Directed by Vardis Marinakis (known for “Silent Road,” “Zizotek,” and “Black Field”), with Panagiotis Iosifelis (“The Beach”) handling the screenplay, and Giorgos Valsamis (“American Girl,” “Milky Way”) serving as cinematographer. Beta’s subsidiary, Mompracem, is providing production services for this project. ERT is co-producing and releasing the series in Greece. The series receives support from EKKOMED Creative Greece, with Boo Productions also contributing to its production.
The Great Chimera” has been added to Foss Productions’ expanding collection of high-end Greek television series. This includes three seasons of the Netflix original “Maestro in Blue” and the Series Mania 2023 competition pick “Milky Way.” Foss Productions’ Crete-set murder mystery, “The Beach,” which has been a hit in prime time on public broadcaster ERT and is being distributed internationally by Beta Film, is currently in its second season.
