Beta Film, a prominent European film-TV company specializing in independent productions, has acquired the international distribution rights for Leticia Dolera’s family drama titled “Pubertat – Secrets, Lies and Human Castles.” This is the sequel to her critically acclaimed work, “Perfect Life,” which won at Canneseries and delved into complex adult relationships and difficult transitions of adolescence.
The six-part, one-hour-long series titled “Pubertat” will conclude Beta’s offerings during the London TV Screenings, scheduled for February 23rd to 28th.
In the Netflix original series “Puberty,” Dolera explores the complicated emotions of estrangement between parents and their adolescent offspring, and how these feelings could potentially be rekindled following a controversial allegation that brings adult sexual norms into sharp focus.
The show takes place in a Catalan town known for constructing towers made of people, called “castells.” These towers have been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity. They are not just an exciting part of local celebrations, but also represent the significance of every individual involved, from the eldest to the youngest participants.
In a tightly-bonded community, the peace is shattered by allegations of sexual assault within their “castells” group. This incident not only exposes the vulnerability of human connections but also highlights the destructive power of social media – affecting all age groups. It seems that almost every town resident and “castell” member is attempting to minimize or deny the events that transpired on a significant festival night.
The film titled ‘Pubertat’ is created by Miriam Porté, who works for Distinto Films based in Barcelona, the same company that produced Neus Ballús’ Locarno-winning film ‘The Odd-Job Men’. Additionally, Oriol Maymó from Doleras contributes to its production through their label Corte y Confección de Películas and Uri Films.”

3Cat, a Catalonian media collective, collaborates on productions with Max based in Spain, as well as AT-Productions from Belgium, contributing to these projects.
In addition to Dolera, the series also features Xavi Saez from “Money Heist” and “Perfect Life”, Betsy Turnez, Anna Alarcón known for Netflix’s “Welcome to Eden”, Biel Duran from Movistar Plus+’s “La Mesías”, and Vicky Peña, who starred in Clara Roquet’s “Libertad”, a 2021 premiere at Cannes Critics’ Week.
The screenplay was jointly penned by Dolera and Almudena Monzú. David Gallart and Manuel Burque contributed individually to the storyline and the overall progression of the script.
In the Movistar Plus-HBO Max-produced TV show “Perfect Life,” which won both the Best Series and a Special Interpretation Prize at Canneseries in 2019 (shared with Celia Freijeiro and Aixa Villagrán, among other honors), Dolera was a co-writer, took on the lead role as director, and also appeared as an actor.
During puberty, our sexual identity and physical changes can profoundly impact us and leave us feeling exposed. Unfortunately, society often sensationalizes and degrades everything related to sex while keeping it shrouded in secrecy. So, how do teenagers and adults navigate their own sexuality within this complex context? This show was created to explore these questions and to engage the community in a conversation about them,” Dolera shared.
In the midst of the renowned ‘castells’ festivals in Catalonia, the series ‘Pubertat’ explores intricate issues concerning guilt, innocence, and hidden family secrets. Boasting themes that are universally relatable such as truth, power, and tradition, this captivating show is deeply rooted in its cultural context yet speaks volumes to global audiences, striking a chord far beyond its local boundaries,” said Peter Lohner, Beta Film VP acquisitions for Hispanic & international.
The show has earned endorsements from ICEC (Catalonia’s cultural industry agency), the Creative Europe MEDIA program, and the Eurimages Co-Production Program for Series, demonstrating a strong backing from these influential cultural and media organizations.
