In Niantic’s game, The Battle League stands out as the most widely played PvP (Player versus Player) mode due to its global competitiveness among trainers. Apart from the regular Great, Ultra, and Master leagues, unique events like the Halloween Tournament also pop up.
This year’s Halloween Pokémon tournament is split into two categories: Little League and Great League. In both leagues, trainers are restricted to using Pokémon with Poison, Bug, Ghost, Dark, or Fairy types. Moreover, only Pokémon with a Combat Power (CP) of less than 500 are eligible for the Little League, whereas the Great League limits participation to Pokémon with a CP of up to 1500.

Since Rock Blast is frequently used, it offers an opportunity to break through your opponent’s defenses early, ultimately setting them up for the powerful finishing blow with Stone Edge.
2. Marill (XL)

- Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Body Slam
- Resistances: Dragon, Water, Ice, Fire, Fighting, Dark, and Bug

Clodsire, though moving slowly under Fast Move pressure, swiftly employs powerful Charged Moves early in a battle. For broader coverage and increased power, Earthquake can be utilized as an option.

Although Cross Poison is inexpensive, swift, and boosted by STAB, it doesn’t pack much punch. Instead, consider using it to provoke shields. If you require broader coverage, opt for Aqua Tail, or go with Sludge Bomb for a potent Poison attack.
5. Greninja
- Fast Move: Water Shuriken
- Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon and Night Slash
- Resistances: Psychic, Water, Steel, Ice, Ghost, Fire, and Dark
- Weaknesses: Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass
Greninja is often seen as a “glass cannon” character because it has low defense capabilities. Yet, its formidable offensive power and numerous beneficial resistances make it a valuable asset in many situations.
As a gamer, I’ve found that Water Shuriken generates the most energy out of all its fast moves at the start of an engagement, which means I can maintain more frequent shield pressure. Hydro Cannon is an incredibly powerful move for its cost, and Night Slash helps me broaden my attack area.

Best Pokemon for Halloween Cup: Great League Edition
1. Clodsire

The Poison Sting remains its most effective Quick Move due to its swift energy production, enabling you to access Earthquake sooner. Despite the high cost of Earthquake, Clodsire’s substantial size ensures its durability until it becomes available. To increase area coverage, consider using Stone Edge.
2. Carbink (XL)
- Fast Move: Rock Throw
- Charged Moves: Power Gem and Moonblast
- Resistances: Dragon, Normal, Flying, Fire, Dark, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Steel, Grass, Ground, and Water
Obtaining Carbink may prove challenging within the game, yet incorporating this two-fold Rock/Fairy-type character into your roster for the Halloween Cup Great League variant is an absolute necessity.
As a gamer, I’ve got this Pokemon here, and by default, it’s packing a punch with Rock Throw. It dishes out some serious rock-based damage, and since it’s its own type move (STAB), it gets even more potent. When it comes to Charged Moves, I’m opting for Power Gem – a relatively affordable Rock-type attack – and Moonblast, which unleashes some massive Fairy-type damage, although it does come with a hefty price tag. With STAB boosting the entire moveset, this guy is ready to deal some extra powerful blows!

In simpler terms, both Quick Attacks and Powerful Moves function similarly, allowing you to use Hydro Cannon earlier in a battle when using the move Water Shuriken.
4. Azumarill (XL)
- Fast Move: Bubble
- Charged Moves: Play Rough and Ice Beam
- Resistances: Bug, Fighting, Water, Ice, Fire, Dark, and Dragon
- Weaknesses: Electric, Grass, and Poison
Without a shadow of a doubt, Azumarill stands out among Fairy-type Pokémon for several reasons. Its move selection is robust, offering wide-ranging attacks. Moreover, its substantial resilience makes it a formidable opponent against Dark types, often outlasting many others in the process.
The top move to quickly unleash is Bubble, offering a decent blend of damage and energy regeneration. It’s wise to also employ Rough, a cost-effective and potent charged move that has an advantage when used against Dark and Poison-type adversaries due to STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus). For additional versatility, Ice Beam is recommended as well.
5. Galarian Weezing (Shadow)
- Fast Move: Fairy Wind
- Charged Moves: Brutal Swing and Play Rough
- Resistances: Fighting, Dragon, Bug, Grass, Fairy, and Dark
- Weaknesses: Ground, Psychic, and Steel
In an unusual blend of Poison and Fairy attributes, Galarian Weezing boasts a move set that spans both Dark and Fire attacks. This gives it the ability to attack types such as Fighting, Dragon, Dark, Psychic, Ghost, Grass, Ice, Bug, and even the type it’s weak against – Steel.
Fairy Wind uniquely profits from Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) and, being a swift charge move, it hastens your ability to utilize Charged Moves. Play Rough is affordable, potent, and provides extensive coverage, while Brutal Swing can lure shields and extend neutral coverage even more.
6. Qwilfish

- Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Sludge Wave
- Resistances: Water, Steel, Poison, Ice, Fire, Fighting, Fairy, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Electric, Ground, and Psychic
In simpler terms, the Qwilfish, with its two types being Water and Poison, boasts a robust type configuration, offering it multiple immunities such as against Poison, Fairy, and Bug types. This makes it an excellent choice for the Halloween Cup due to these specific resistances.
While both Fast Moves are quite similar, Poison Sting targets better the type of Pokemon in this particular tournament and has amazing energy generation. On the other hand, Aqua Tail is a wonderful Charged Move that can deal great STAB damage but also is good at baiting enemy shields.
Pokemon Go Halloween Cup start & end dates
The mini version of the Halloween Tournament commenced on October 15, 2024, and will continue through October 22, 2024.
After that, the “Halloween Cup: Great League” is scheduled to start on October 22, 2024, and will continue until October 29, 2024.
